She won a modelling competition, was placed into a group with dozens of members, and came out the other side as an actor and an illustrator.

Kaoru Mitsumune (光宗薫), born 26 April 1993 in Ehime and raised in Osaka, took the Grand Prix at the 2011 Kobe Collection and joined AKB48’s thirteenth generation. She is signed to Ito Company, and in 2026 she takes the part of Katagiri Asuna in the MBS adaptation The Boy and I Who Will Break Up in 100 Days.

Large Japanese idol groups work as a filter rather than a destination. Dozens of members enter, a handful get the promotion, and everybody eventually leaves. What matters afterwards is what each person built while inside: a following, a skill, a name people recognise. She left with all three and a second profession as an illustrator on top.
