Keita Kawajiri
BIOGRAPHY
Keita Kawajiri (Japanese: 川尻恵太; born February 4, 1981) is a Japanese director and screenwriter from Hokkaido, founder of the theatrical unit SUGARBOY, credited as writer and director of the 2025 stage musical adaptation of Cherry Magic! Thirty Years of Virginity Can Make You a Wizard?!
Kawajiri formed the comedy duo “1・2・DON” in high school, later founded the theatre company Gakugire in 2000, and established the Naebo Saint Royal Opera Company in 2004 before relocating to Tokyo in 2006. He founded his current theatrical unit, SUGARBOY, in 2008, becoming a prominent playwright and director in Tokyo’s 2.5-D theatre scene, stage adaptations of manga, anime, and games. His directing and writing credits include productions of Mob Psycho 100, Touken Ranbu musicals, Cardcaptor Sakura spin-offs, and Fate series adaptations, and he is particularly known for writing and directing the Aoharu Railroad musical franchise across multiple productions from 2015 to 2023. He also serves as representative director of MASHIKAKU Inc.
He served as both writer and director on Cherry Magic The Musical, the production that ran at TOKYO DOME CITY HALL and Aiplaza Toyohashi in April 2025.
BLGLFlix editorial view
His is the only page here whose entire body of catalogued work is a stage production.
Keita Kawajiri, born 4 February 1981 in Hokkaido, wrote and directed Cherry Magic The Musical, staged across April 2025 in two rooms, first at Tokyo Dome City Hall and then in Toyohashi. It is the single musical in this catalogue.
Japan’s 2.5-D theatre industry adapts manga, anime and games to the stage at a scale with no real equivalent anywhere else, with its own venues, its own returning audience and a run structure closer to a concert tour than to a play. Kawajiri has worked inside it since founding the unit SUGARBOY in 2008, on Mob Psycho 100, Touken Ranbu, Cardcaptor Sakura and Fate, and on the Aoharu Railroad musicals across eight years.
A stage credit sits awkwardly in a screen database. There is nothing to stream, the work existed for a few weeks in two rooms, and what survives is a cast list, the rooms it played and a handful of dates. Keeping it is the point. The adaptation happened, and a catalogue that counted only things with an episode number would quietly say it did not.
His birth date, birthplace, professions, company and one verified account are recorded. There is no debut year, because his theatre career starts around 2000 and no single production is documented as the first.
