SYNOPSIS

Kiyoshi Adachi (Ryo Matsuda) reaches thirty without ever having been in a relationship and, in keeping with a piece of Japanese folklore the story treats as simple fact, wakes to find he can hear the thoughts of anyone who touches him. What sounds like a gift plays as an ordeal: a packed commuter train becomes a wall of noise, and the polite fictions of office life stop being polite. Then his hand brushes Yuichi Kurosawa (Yoshihiko Aramaki), the capable, effortlessly liked colleague the whole department admires, and the thought Adachi picks up is a full-hearted, years-long love he was never meant to overhear.

The musical turns that premise into a stage engine. Kurosawa's runaway inner monologue becomes song, Adachi's flustered non-answers become physical comedy, and the distance between what is thought and what can actually be said carries the evening. Adachi's obstacle is never doubt about Kurosawa's feelings, which he can hear with embarrassing clarity, but doubt about himself, and he keeps rewriting sincerity as politeness because he cannot picture being wanted. Around the pair the company fills in the office: Masato Tsuge (Shuji Kikuchi), the blunt colleague who notices more than he lets on, Minato Wataya (Satsuki Nakayama) and Yuta Rokkaku (Sho Sakai) with their own tangled timing, Nozomi Fujisaki (Kaho Takada) and Mari Kurosawa (Yui Hasegawa) nudging the two men toward honesty, and Asahina (Naoya Gomoto) rounding out the workplace.

Written and directed by Keita Kawajiri, who works as a creator under the name SUGARBOY, the production ran at TOKYO DOME CITY HALL from April 11 to 20, 2025, then at Aiplaza Toyohashi in Aichi from April 25 to 27, with a live stream for audiences who could not travel to either house. Shuji Kikuchi joined the company late, taking over Tsuge after Daichi Saeki withdrew from the originally announced cast. The theme number, "Demo ne.", was produced by agehasprings Party, and the score keeps the warmth the source material is known for: this is a comedy about adults being shy, not a farce built on a supernatural gimmick. Adapted from Yuu Toyota's manga, it holds to the story's quiet argument that an ordinary romance between two men earns a full stage, a band and a curtain call, and it takes its place alongside the 2020 Japanese drama, the 2022 live-action film, the 2023 Thai remake and the 2024 anime.

MAIN CAST & CHARACTERS

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • What it is: the 2025 Japanese stage musical adaptation of Yuu Toyota’s Cherry Magic! manga, produced by Nelke Planning.
  • The leads: Kiyoshi Adachi (Ryo Matsuda) and Yuichi Kurosawa (Yoshihiko Aramaki), the third distinct pairing to play the roles.
  • The run: TOKYO DOME CITY HALL in Tokyo from April 11 to 20, 2025, then Aiplaza Toyohashi in Aichi from April 25 to 27, 2025.
  • Behind it: written and directed by Keita Kawajiri of SUGARBOY, with theme song “Demo ne.” produced by agehasprings Party.
  • Supporting cast: Masato Tsuge (Shuji Kikuchi), Minato Wataya (Satsuki Nakayama), Yuta Rokkaku (Sho Sakai), and Nozomi Fujisaki (Kaho Takada).
  • 2.5-D tradition: both leads work primarily in Japan’s stage-adaptation genre, which has its own conventions for playing drawn characters live.
  • Why theatre suits it: the plot depends on the audience hearing thoughts a character cannot say aloud, which the stage handles through song and direct address.
  • Home release: a Blu-ray followed on September 10, 2025, carrying the final performance plus rehearsal and backstage footage.
  • Availability caveat: no subtitled international release exists, and the live stream offered during the run is no longer available.
  • Where it sits: the most recent Cherry Magic production, after the manga, two live-action versions, the Thai remake, the anime, and the anime film.

EDITOR’S VERDICT

Cherry Magic The Musical (チェリまほ The Musical) is the franchise's stage adaptation, produced by Nelke Planning and written and directed by Keita Kawajiri of SUGARBOY. It ran at TOKYO DOME CITY HALL from April 11 to 20, 2025, then at Aiplaza Toyohashi in Aichi from April 25 to 27, 2025.

The Third Adachi and Kurosawa

Ryo Matsuda plays Adachi and Yoshihiko Aramaki plays Kurosawa, the third distinct pairing to take the roles after Eiji Akaso and Keita Machida on screen and Chiaki Kobayashi and Ryota Suzuki in the anime. Both leads come out of Japan's 2.5-D stage tradition, where adaptations of manga and anime are a genre in their own right with their own performance conventions.

Staging this particular story presents a specific problem: the entire plot depends on the audience hearing thoughts that one character cannot say aloud. Theatre is actually well suited to that, since direct address and aside are native to the form, and the production leans on song to carry Kurosawa's runaway inner monologue rather than trying to hide it.

What to Expect

  • 2.5-D staging: the manga's visual language translated to live performance.
  • Full supporting ensemble: Tsuge, Wataya, Rokkaku, Fujisaki, and Mari Kurosawa all appear.
  • Original theme song: "Demo ne." produced by agehasprings Party.

The Verdict

A faithful stage reading aimed squarely at existing fans of the franchise and of 2.5-D theatre. The run was short and regional, so the Blu-ray released in September 2025 is realistically the only way to see it now, and there is no subtitled international release.

Editorial note: not scored. BLGLFLIX has not attended a performance, and scoring a stage production from recordings alone would not be honest.
