This page says what has been done to make blglflix.com usable for as many people as possible, and, just as usefully, what has not been done yet. It is an honest status report rather than a claim of conformance.
1. The aim
The target is the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, level AA. This site does not claim to meet that standard in full. No independent audit has been carried out, and parts of the site have not been tested with assistive technology. Where something falls short, the intention is to say so here and fix it, not to state a conformance level that has not been earned.
2. What has been done
- Text alternatives for images. Posters and portraits carry alternative text naming the work or the person, so that a screen reader announces what the image is rather than a filename.
- Headings in order. Pages use a single main heading followed by properly nested section headings, so that a screen reader’s heading list is a usable table of contents.
- Real tables. Data tables are marked up as tables with a caption and with row and column headers identified, rather than being drawn with layout tricks, so that a screen reader can read a cell together with what it belongs to.
- Readable text. Body text is set at a comfortable size with generous line spacing, and the page reflows rather than requiring horizontal scrolling on a narrow screen.
- Keyboard use. Navigation, links, filters and the site search can be reached and operated with a keyboard.
- Language declared. Pages declare their language so that a screen reader pronounces them correctly.
- Reduced motion respected. Where a browser is set to prefer reduced motion, animation is suppressed.
- No autoplay. Nothing plays sound or video on its own.
3. Known problems
These are the gaps this site is aware of. Listing them is not an excuse for them.
- Some images are missing alternative text. A set of artist images imported in bulk went in without it. They are being filled in, and a missing one is a bug rather than a decision.
- Colour contrast has not been measured everywhere. Small supporting text, badges and the footer credit line are set in grey on white and may fall below the required contrast ratio. This is being reviewed.
- Visible focus is inconsistent. Some interactive elements show a clear outline when reached by keyboard and others rely on the browser default, which can be hard to see.
- No skip link. There is no “skip to content” link, so a keyboard user passes through the navigation on every page.
- Filters and interactive controls have not been fully tested with a screen reader, and some may not announce their state clearly.
- No formal audit and no testing with users of assistive technology has been carried out.
4. Things that help in the meantime
- Browser zoom works normally, and the layout reflows rather than clipping. Nothing here needs to be read at a fixed size.
- A browser’s reader mode works on catalogue records and articles, because the text is ordinary marked-up text.
- Nothing on this site is behind a login, a timer or a CAPTCHA, so no reader is locked out by failing a test.
5. Tell us what is broken
If something here is unusable, a report is genuinely useful and will be acted on rather than filed. Write to info@blglflix.com and, if possible, say which page, what you were trying to do, and what you use to browse, for example a screen reader and its version, or keyboard only, or high contrast mode.
Reports are read within two business days. A fix that is quick is made immediately. A fix that is not gets an honest estimate rather than a promise, and the content itself is supplied in another form in the meantime if that helps.
