Yuu Toyota

Yuu Toyota (Japanese: 豊田悠, Toyota Yū; born 10 February, birth year not publicly disclosed) is a Japanese manga artist, best known for creating Cherry Magic! Thirty Years of Virginity Can Make You a Wizard?! (30歳まで童貞だと魔法使いになれるらしい), a boys’ love romantic comedy both written and illustrated by Toyota, serialised in Square Enix’s Gangan pixiv since 1 September 2018.

Toyota debuted in 2010 with Nobara no Hanayome (野ばらの花嫁), which took the Debut Excellence Award (デビュー優秀者賞) at the 35th Hakusensha Athena Newcomer Award. The two-volume work appeared under Hakusensha’s Hana to Yume Comics imprint, placing the start of this career in shōjo manga rather than BL. Japanese Wikipedia summarises the years since as spanning「少女漫画や青年漫画」, shōjo and seinen manga, alongside the boys’ love titles that later brought international recognition.

Before Cherry Magic!, the longest-running Toyota title was Papa to Oyaji no Uchi Gohan (パパと親父のウチご飯), a domestic cooking series serialised in Shinchosha’s Monthly Comic @Bunch (later Monthly Comic Bunch) from 2014 to 2020 and collected in 13 volumes, with the spin-off Papa to Oyaji no Uchi Nomi (パパと親父のウチ呑み) running to three. Other works include Kamisama wa Ikiru no ga Tsurai (神様は生きるのがつらい, Sylph Comics, three volumes, 2014 to 2015), Kisu ni Koizoku (キスに恋属) and Hotel La Vie en Rose (ホテル・ラヴィアンローズ), both 2013.

Cherry Magic! began as a four-page manga posted to Twitter in January 2018. In an interview with pixiv’s official media outlet pixivision, Toyota recalled that an editor made contact less than an hour after that post, with serialisation discussions following within days. The premise, a man who reaches 30 still a virgin, gains the power to read thoughts by touch, and discovers that a popular colleague is quietly in love with him, was itself a reversal: Toyota has said the original concept cast the virgin as the pursuer, before deciding it was more interesting for the mind-reader to be the one pursued. The series reached its 16th collected volume on 20 November 2025 and topped the Nationwide Bookstore Employees’ Recommended BL Comics 2019 poll.

The manga has become one of the most widely adapted BL properties of its era, behind a 2020 Japanese television drama, a 2022 live-action film, a 2024 anime series, an anime film, a 2025 stage musical and a 2023 Thai remake, with Toyota credited as original author (原作) on each. A newer series, Naraku no Hoshi (奈落の星), launched in Gangan pixiv on 28 December 2024 and is scheduled for English release by Square Enix Manga as A Starlit Darkness in May 2026. Toyota was also announced as a guest of Anime Expo 2026 in Los Angeles.
