About this archive
Taiwan was telling queer love stories on screen early, and this page shows it. It reaches back to the HIStory anthology and Your Name Engraved Herein, a film set in the months after martial law was lifted, and runs right up to the newest series.
Two flavours keep coming back. One is the gangster romance, where a detective or a student gets pulled into organised crime, as in HIStory3: Trapped and Kiseki: Dear to Me. The other is the school story, full of rivalry, bands and friendships nobody quite names. GL fans get Fragrance of the First Flower, which returns to a first love years later as same sex marriage arrives. GagaOOLala, the Taiwan based streamer, carries much of this work and sometimes helps make it too.
Newer titles include Wishing Upon the Shooting Stars, Connecting to You, Smile After Tears, Dual Stars and Unknown. My tip: begin with Your Name Engraved Herein for a beautiful film, then We Best Love: No. 1 For You for a school romance. Keep tissues close for the first one.
