Smile After Tears

Zhang Junjia (Zhang Jun-jia) arrives at Tianyuan High School as the new transfer student, a boy who meets everything with a grin and lets almost nobody see what the grin is covering, a difficult family situation and money worries he has decided are no one else's business. The school band gets him instead, and with it He Yankai (He Yan-kai), the group's lead singer, aloof and magnetic in equal measure, whose easy stage presence sits on top of a congenital heart condition he has lived with all his life. Music does the talking neither boy is ready to do. Rehearsals turn into something warmer, an attraction that stays unspoken because naming it feels riskier than simply living inside it, and the first stretch of Smile After Tears belongs entirely to that slow, song-shaped courtship. As is common in idol-led Taiwanese dramas, the three Atom Boyz leads play characters who carry their own names.

Then a car accident cuts the story in half. What had been a campus romance becomes a study of grief: Jun-jia carrying a loss he has no language for, still smiling on the outside because smiling is the one thing he knows how to do. Slowly he registers something he had been too preoccupied to notice, that Zheng Diaoqin (Zheng Diao-qin), a quiet fixture of the school basketball team, has been standing nearby the whole time, watching over him and asking for nothing back. A second, gentler connection begins to take shape in the space the first one left behind. Around the three of them, Xiao Yuchen (Chang Chi-fu), Du Chengwei (Chen Po-che), Gu Yitong (Lin Shu-yun), Jun Wei (Ah Ben) and A Mao (Lawrence Liu) keep the band, the classroom and the family pressure in motion, while a symbolic Ferryman (Prince Chiu) drifts through the story as its one openly figurative presence.

Smile After Tears (轉過頭，幫你擦眼淚) is TIPA Entertainment's first boys' love production, directed by Chiang Ping-chen with Ann Lu also credited, and it is built as a showcase for its Atom Boyz cast: twelve episodes of roughly twenty-five to twenty-seven minutes, launched two at a time on 20 May 2026 and then weekly on Wednesdays through the 29 July finale. It streams on Hami Video in Taiwan and internationally on iQIYI and GagaOOLala. The original songs are not decoration here, they carry the emotional weight a healing melodrama needs, and the series is upfront that its subject is grief, illness and the way affection outlasts a farewell rather than romantic wish-fulfilment. Even its most discussed scene was reportedly filmed with a transparent barrier between the actors. How Jun-jia learns to hold both boys at once is the part the finale keeps for itself.
