Fragrance of the First Flower
What happens
Yi-Ming (Zaizai Lin) is raising her son largely alone while her husband works away from home, and years of distance have worn her marriage down to routine and quiet disappointment. She does not expect a friend's wedding to change anything. Then she sees Ting-Ting (Lyan Cheng) across the room, the woman she was quietly, intensely in love with years earlier, before both of them were steered onto safer, more conventional paths by family, timing, and fear. The reunion is brief and polite on the surface, but it reopens a door Yi-Ming had spent a decade keeping shut. In the days after the wedding, the small, dutiful shape of her adult life starts to feel less like a given and more like a choice she never consciously made.
As Yi-Ming and Ting-Ting begin seeing each other again, old tenderness comes back faster than either of them is ready for, and it arrives alongside real fear. Taiwan has just become the first place in Asia to legalize same-sex marriage, and the headline turns an abstract, safely hypothetical question into something Yi-Ming can no longer avoid: what would it actually mean to choose this life, in the open, instead of quietly grieving it. People close to her, including Ren-Xiu (Yi Lee), notice the change in her and react with a mix of concern, curiosity, and quiet pushback. Yi-Ming has to weigh her son, her marriage, her reputation, and a long-buried sense of who she actually is against a feeling for Ting-Ting that never fully went away, no matter how carefully she tried to bury it.
The story picks up again years later, after Yi-Ming and Ting-Ting have already been pulled apart once. Yi-Ming is now divorced, sharing custody of her son Xiao-Zhe, and rebuilding a life on her own terms when a chance discovery, Ting-Ting fronting a band rehearsing for a festival show, pulls the two women back into each other's orbit. An old, half-forgotten promise from long ago gives them a reason to see each other again, but neither approaches it as a clean second chance. Older, warier, and acutely aware of what a second failure would cost them both, Yi-Ming and Ting-Ting have to work out whether the love that survived one separation can survive being chosen out loud a second time.
