Teng I-han — Taiwanese director and screenwriter, Fragrance of the First Flower

Teng I-han

BIOGRAPHY

Teng I-han (Chinese: 鄧依涵, born 24 October 1990), who also works under the English name Angel Teng, is a Taiwanese director, screenwriter and editor. She holds a master’s degree in psychology from National Taiwan University.

She was first recognised as a writer for the stage, winning a distinction in the modern and children’s theatre script category of the Ministry of Education’s Literary Arts Awards for Meng Hui. In 2015 her screenplay Wo Qin Ai De Yi Fu Zi took an award of excellence at the Ministry of Culture’s Outstanding Screenplay Awards. It was produced and released in 2018 under the new title Qin Ai De Luan Nan Riji, and was selected by a number of festivals in Taiwan and abroad.

In 2021 she directed and wrote Fragrance of the First Flower, the GagaOOLala original. At the 57th Golden Bell Awards in 2022 she won Best Screenplay for a Miniseries or Television Film for it, and was nominated for Best Director in the same category. The series also took Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress that year.

Her first feature film as a director, Wo Zai Zheli Deng Ni, was released in 2024, and she cut it herself as well as directing it.

Teng I-han wrote, directed and edited her first feature, released in 2024.

She wrote and directed Fragrance of the First Flower, which ran in 2021 and again in 2025. The second season was directed by Wang Yi-ling.

Her 2015 screenplay prize came three years before that script reached the screen as Qin Ai De Luan Nan Riji in 2018.

Her prizes follow the forms she has worked in. The first is for a stage script, the second for a feature screenplay in 2015, and the third for a television miniseries screenplay at the Golden Bell Awards in 2022. Each win is for writing, and the Best Director recognition of 2022 took the form of a nomination in the same category. Seven years lie between the 2015 screenplay award and the 2022 Golden Bell, and the 2024 feature arrived two years after that, with editing added to her credits alongside directing.

In my view the awards point to where her strength lies. A stage script, a feature screenplay and a miniseries screenplay are three different forms, and she was recognised for writing in each, which I read as a sign of a writer who moves between forms easily.

If you want to see her directing, I would start with the first season of Fragrance of the First Flower, the six episodes she both wrote and directed, and then go to Wo Zai Zheli Deng Ni, the feature she also edited. A psychology degree and a writing career sit together in her record, though I would not draw a link she has not drawn herself.
