April Liu
BIOGRAPHY
April Liu (Chinese: 劉心宇, born 2 September 1988) is a Taiwanese actor. She had an entire professional life before this one: prior to entering the industry she worked as an adjunct clinical psychologist at National Chengchi University and at China University of Technology.
Her route into acting ran through the theatre and then through one of the more deliberate training projects in recent Taiwanese television. From 2008 she performed on stage, most consistently with the Taipei company 動見体劇團, appearing in Arabian Night (2010), Talking with Jung (2012), Not Far From Home (2014 to 2016), The Patient (2018) and the company’s War cycle, which toured internationally between 2010 and 2017. In 2015 she was selected for the Good Actor class at Q Place, the acting school founded by eight directors led by Wang Hsiao-ti, and graduated with its first cohort. She was named the eighth Q actor in the Future Star line-up for Qseries (植劇場), the drama initiative that came out of the school.
Qseries gave her a run of parts of increasing size: a copy shop office worker in Lian Ai Sha Chen Bao (2016), a nurse in Tu Mi (2016), a presenter in Ji Mu Zhi Jia (2017), and then the lead role of Jiang Yu-fei in Meng Li de Yi Qian Dao Qiang (2017), directed by Wang Hsiao-ti, which is the part that made her known. She followed it with Wu Wei Ba Zhen de Sui Yue (2017), the cross-strait co-production Dong Wu Xi Lian Ren A (2018) as Jenny, Yin Yuan Tian Cheng (2020) for Da Ai Television, Shui Shuo Ma Ma Xiang Yue Liang (2022) for Wang Hsiao-ti’s Zhuo Theatre strand, and Di Yu Li Zhang (2023) for PTS. In 2020 she won Best Actress at the UK Autumn Short Film Festival for her role as Laura in the short film Yan Cao.
She plays Jia-Xin in GagaOOLala’s Girls’ Love drama Fragrance of the First Flower, appearing in the 2021 first season directed by Angel Teng and returning for the 2025 second season directed by Wang Yi-ling, which was carried by GagaOOLala and Netflix.
Away from acting she has worked behind the camera as a programme planner on the Public Television Service discussion show PTS Thursday Night Show in 2022 and 2023, and has appeared in music videos for Michael Wong and Chris Ko and in a long run of Taiwanese commercials.
