About this archive

Prose fiction supplies a large share of what eventually reaches the screen in this field, and the author credit marks the person who wrote the original book, web novel or light novel rather than the script made from it. Serialised publication is common: many works first appear chapter by chapter on a web platform, gather a readership there, and only later reach print or licensing.

The relationship between an author and an adaptation varies widely. Some writers are consulted closely, work on the script themselves, or take an adapting screenwriter credit; others sell the rights and have no involvement in production at all. Where a novel is well known, the adaptation is judged against it by an existing audience, which changes what a production can safely alter. Authors in this field frequently publish under a pen name, and some work across formats, writing novels, audio drama scripts and comic scenarios.

Someone tracing a person’s work through this site will find the author credit useful for direction of travel. It points forward from a book to every series, animation or audio release built on it, and backwards from an adaptation to the text it began as.
