About this archive
Melody and lyrics are what this credit covers, as distinct from scoring a production instrumentally. A songwriter supplies the actual song: the theme playing over the titles, the insert track placed at a turning point, the ballad released as a single and performed at every event afterwards. The work is often commissioned to a brief that specifies mood, tempo and sometimes a lyrical reference to the story.
Songwriters in this field regularly wear other hats. Many perform their own material, produce it themselves, or write for artists on the same label, and a single soundtrack may be built almost entirely by two or three people passing tracks between them. Where a lyricist and a composer are credited separately, the division is words and music; where one name appears, that person did both.
The credit is worth following because songs travel independently of the productions they were written for. A theme can outlive its series, be covered by other artists, appear in later projects and become the thing an audience associates with a pairing, so a songwriter’s presence on this site often connects productions that otherwise have nothing in common.
