A single novel, and it opened on five platforms in two continents’ worth of markets. That is the Taiwanese adaptation route in one line, and it is worth setting against the four others this site has now documented in the same pass.

In Japan, a manga goes into a quarterly broadcast slot and comes out as ten short episodes, with the writer attached to the schedule rather than to the story. In Korea, a webtoon reaches the screen because a webtoon studio like YLAB is standing behind it, and even then it airs on a telecom app. In Thailand, a novel is bought by a studio that owns the whole chain and puts it on television the same week it hits YouTube. In China, a decade old danmei novel gets filmed again, but the production has to acquire a second country to do it. And in Taiwan, a prose web novel becomes thirteen hour long episodes financed by two small companies and pushed onto every aggregator that will take it, because there is no domestic broadcaster in the picture at all.

Five countries, five completely different machines, and one thing identical in all of them: the source text is the unit of value. Almost every queer series this site has examined from 2024 onward arrived with a readership already attached. The exceptions we have found, and we have looked, tend to be short: an eighteen minute Taiwanese film written from nothing, a nine minute Korean short. Original screenplays still exist in this genre, but they are getting the small budgets, and the books are getting the seasons.

What that means for a page like this one is that the author is doing more work in the industry than the credit implies. A novel credit looks like a footnote next to a director and a cast. In practice it is the reason the thing was commissioned. That is why this site keeps profiles for novelists whose only screen credit is a single line in a crew list, and why we would rather write four hundred words about how one book reached five platforms than pad a page with invented biography about a person who has chosen to publish under one name.
