What happens

Cherry Magic! Thirty Years of Virginity Can Make You a Wizard?! Special Edition re-edits the franchise's 2024 television anime into a single feature, and the story it compresses is the one every other version of Cherry Magic is built on. Kiyoshi Adachi (Chiaki Kobayashi) is an unremarkable salaryman who reaches his thirtieth birthday having never been in a relationship, and discovers that the old superstition about virgins becoming wizards has quietly come true: from that morning on, he can hear the thoughts of anyone whose skin touches his. The first mind he reads belongs to Yuichi Kurosawa (Ryota Suzuki), the handsome, effortlessly capable colleague the whole office admires, and what comes through is not small talk but the fact that Kurosawa has been in love with him for years and has never once intended to say so.

From there the film moves through the same beats as the series. Adachi's first instinct is to decide he has misheard, because a man like Kurosawa could not possibly want a man like him, and the drama comes not from secrecy but from that refusal to be convinced. Kurosawa, who has no idea he is being read, simply keeps being patient. Around the leads the workplace fills in, with Masato Tsuge (Makoto Furukawa), Minato Wataya (Gen Sato), Yuta Rokkaku (Yusuke Shirai) and Nozomi Fujisaki (Ami Koshimizu) among the people around Adachi. Sixty minutes is heavy compression for twelve episodes, and the cut assumes prior knowledge, playing as a companion piece for viewers who already know these characters rather than as a way into the story.

Animated by Satelight and distributed by avex pictures, the film opened in Japanese cinemas on 13 December 2024 at a running time of roughly 60 minutes, with Yoshiko Okuda, who directed the television anime, returning to oversee it. The new material includes narration newly recorded by the two leads, animated footage that did not appear in the broadcast version, and a new ending theme, which give the story's quieter moments a different weight. The tone is unchanged from the rest of the franchise, gentle and almost entirely free of cruelty, treating a gay office romance as something ordinary and using the mind-reading to remove misunderstanding rather than to manufacture it. The twelve-episode television anime, adapted from Yuu Toyota's manga, is the full version of the story. The film is easily confused with Cherry Magic! THE MOVIE, the 2022 live-action sequel, which is a separate production.

6.5/10

The Cherry Magic! special edited version carries footage that was not in the television broadcast, and it is built as a companion piece to the series.

What It Actually Is

The film re-cuts the 2024 Satelight series into roughly sixty minutes and opened in Japanese cinemas on December 13, 2024, distributed by avex pictures. The cut assumes you already know who Adachi and Kurosawa are.

What justifies it is the new material: newly recorded narration from Chiaki Kobayashi and Ryota Suzuki, animated sequences absent from the broadcast cut, and a new ending theme. For viewers already invested in the series, that is a real reason to revisit.

What to Expect

  • Condensed retelling: the full series arc in about an hour.
  • New footage: animated scenes and narration not in the TV cut.
  • Theatrical release: Japanese cinemas from December 2024.

The Verdict

Judged as a supplement it is well made, and the new sequences are worth seeing. It runs an hour where the series ran twelve episodes. Watch the twelve-episode series first and treat this as an extra.

Final Score: 6.5/10

Twelve episodes of about twenty four minutes become a single hour, roughly a fifth of the original running time.

The broadcast run adds up to about 288 minutes, and the film condenses it into around 60 while the 2024 anime series stays the complete telling. Satelight animated both, and the same director, Yoshiko Okuda, is credited on each.

The compilation replaces the series ending theme, "Magical Love", with "Love Candle", again sung by the two leads. The film was announced in late March 2024 as the television run finished, roughly nine months before it reached cinemas.

The proportions are the most useful thing to know before sitting down. Sixty minutes against 288 leaves an average of five minutes for each of the twelve broadcast episodes, so the film works as a sequence of selected moments rather than a summary that visits every episode in turn. The narration newly recorded by the two leads is the film's own addition, and the animated footage that did not appear in the broadcast sits alongside the familiar scenes.

The ending song changes as well. "Love Candle" takes the place of "Magical Love", so the last thing a viewer hears is new even when everything before it is familiar.

The title is easy to confuse with Cherry Magic! (Movie). That film is the live-action sequel from 2022, runs 104 minutes and stars Eiji Akaso and Keita Machida, while this one is an animated re-edit of the story's first twelve episodes.

Among the screen versions this is the shortest. The Japanese drama runs 276 minutes, the anime series 288 and the Thai remake 588, nearly ten times the length of this film. The animated film is a good fit for viewers who finished the series and want to return to it in a single short sitting, and for anyone who likes a theatrical format of about an hour.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Which series does it draw on?

The Satelight anime broadcast on TV Tokyo and BS TV Tokyo between 11 January and 28 March 2024, announced the previous July.

It is considerably shorter. Sixty minutes against the 104 of the 2022 live-action feature, which reflects its nature as a compilation rather than an original story built for the cinema.
