Cherry Magic! Thirty Years of Virginity Can Make You a Wizard?!

CompletedTV Series🇯🇵

What happens

On the morning of his thirtieth birthday, Kiyoshi Adachi (Eiji Akaso) discovers that the old office joke about virgins turning into wizards is not a joke at all. He is an ordinary salaryman at a homeware trading company, has never been in a relationship, and has long since stopped expecting one, so the sudden ability to hear the thoughts of anyone he touches arrives less as a gift than as an ordeal. The first mind he reads belongs to a stranger crushed against him on a packed commuter train, and it is pure contempt. Then his hand brushes Yuichi Kurosawa (Keita Machida), the handsome, effortlessly competent colleague the whole department admires, and what comes through is nothing like contempt: Kurosawa has been in love with him for years and has never once intended to say so.

Adachi knows exactly how Kurosawa feels from the first episode, so the story is not powered by misunderstanding. The obstacle is that Adachi cannot believe he is a person worth wanting this much, and Kurosawa never presses. Around them the workplace fills in: Yuta Rokkaku (Takuya Kusakawa), the earnest new graduate who looks up to Adachi; Nozomi Fujisaki (Ryo Sato), the level-headed colleague who helps clear the way for the pair; and Kengo Urabe (Suzunosuke), who offloads his own workload onto Adachi and first repeats the wizard legend. A second thread follows Masato Tsuge (Kodai Asaka), a novelist living in Adachi's building, and Minato Wataya (Yutaro), the young delivery worker who keeps turning up at his door.

Directed by Hiroki Kazama with Hiroaki Yuasa and Masataka Hayashi, and written by Erika Yoshida and Satoko Okazaki, the drama adapts Yuu Toyota's manga, serialized by Square Enix in Gangan pixiv. It ran on TV Tokyo's late-night MokuDra 25 block from 9 October to 25 December 2020, twelve episodes of roughly 23 minutes each, plus two streaming-exclusive specials. The opening theme is "Ubugoe" by Omoinotake and the ending theme is "Good Love Your Love" by DEEP SQUAD. Known in Japan by the abbreviation CheriMaho, it plays a gay office romance as warm, low-stakes and completely unremarkable. A 2022 feature film, a 2023 Thai remake, a 2024 anime series and its compilation film, and a 2025 stage musical all grew out of it.

I will just say it: if you only ever watch one Japanese BL, make it this one. Cherry Magic! is the 2020 drama that launched a film, a Thai remake, an anime, an anime movie and a stage musical, and once you meet Adachi and Kurosawa you will understand why everybody wanted another go at them.

Happy Thirtieth, Here Are Some Superpowers

Kiyoshi Adachi, a salaryman at a homeware trading company, wakes up on his thirtieth birthday and finds that the old office joke is true: having never been in a relationship has turned him into a wizard. Specifically, he can hear the thoughts of anyone he touches. The first mind he reads on a packed commuter train is pure contempt. Then his hand brushes Yuichi Kurosawa, the handsome, effortlessly brilliant colleague the whole department adores, and Kurosawa's head is full of one thing. He has been in love with Adachi for years.

No Misunderstandings, Just Nerves

Here is the clever part. Adachi knows exactly how Kurosawa feels from episode one, so there is no 'does he like me?' guessing game. The real obstacle is that Adachi cannot believe anyone would want him that much, and Kurosawa never pushes. Eiji Akaso plays Adachi all flinches and half-finished sentences, and Keita Machida gives Kurosawa a restraint that makes his longing even sweeter. Office romance, slow burn, mind reading, pining: it is the ultimate comfort watch, warm and almost completely free of cruelty.

The Other Two (Do Not Skip Them)

A second thread follows Masato Tsuge (Kodai Asaka), a novelist in Adachi's building, and Minato Wataya (Yutaro), the young delivery worker who keeps showing up at his door. Round that out with Takuya Kusakawa as eager new graduate Rokkaku and Ryo Sato as the level-headed Fujisaki, and the office feels like a place you would happily work.

Your Cherry Magic Watch List

Twelve episodes of about 23 minutes, aired at 01:00 on Fridays on TV Tokyo from 9 October to 25 December 2020, so yes, the finale was a Christmas present. Two streaming specials sit outside the main story. It is on Netflix, Crunchyroll, GagaOOLala, Prime Video, Viki, Apple TV and WeTV, depending on where you live. Then work your way through the family: Cherry Magic! (Movie) from 2022, the Thai remake Cherry Magic from 2023, the 2024 Anime and its Anime Movie, and Cherry Magic The Musical from 2025. Start here, though. This is the original.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Did the manga's author place conditions on this adaptation?

She did. Yuu Toyota asked the production to keep derogatory language about the yaoi genre and about virgins out of the script, so the warmth the series is known for was a term the source author attached to the work.

What is unusual about the rule the magic follows?

It is granted for a lack rather than for merit, and it lasts only as long as the lack does. Adachi can know what everyone around him feels precisely because he has never had anyone.

Which other versions of Cherry Magic exist?

A 2022 film, a 2023 Thai remake, a 2024 anime series and compilation film, and a 2025 stage musical, all linked from the editor's note above.

Who plays Adachi and Kurosawa?

Eiji Akaso plays Kiyoshi Adachi (安達清), a salaryman at a homeware trading company, and Keita Machida plays Yuichi Kurosawa (黒沢優一). Kodai Asaka appears as Masato Tsuge, Yutaro as Minato Wataya and Takuya Kusakawa as Yuta Rokkaku.

When was the international licence signed?

As the domestic run was ending. Crunchyroll picked up the rights for territories outside Asia in December 2020, the same month the twelve-episode broadcast finished.

How did it perform in the region?

In Taiwan it was the most watched title on KKTV for six consecutive weeks.

When did it broadcast, and in what slot?

Twelve episodes at 01:00 on Fridays on TV Tokyo, weekly from 9 October to 25 December 2020 with no breaks, at about 23 minutes each. The finale went out on Christmas Day.

Where can it be watched?

Netflix, Crunchyroll, GagaOOLala, Prime Video, Viki, Apple TV and WeTV carry it, and coverage varies by territory.

Where a title can be watched, and who is credited on it, may have changed since publication, as our disclaimer explains.
