BIOGRAPHY
Masataka Hayashi (林雅貴) is a Japanese television director and one of the three directors of TV Tokyo’s Cherry Magic! Thirty Years of Virginity Can Make You a Wizard?! (2020), where he took the fifth and sixth episodes, the pair written by Satoko Okazaki rather than by lead writer Erika Yoshida.
His credit list runs from the film Custard Pudding (2010) to television dramas listed for 2026. His television work includes Octo: Mind Investigator Akari Shinno (2022), Ciguatera (2023), Kimi ga Shinu Made Ato 100 Nichi (2023) and Taigan no Kaji (2025).
His most relevant BL credit after Cherry Magic is I Cannot Reach You (君には届かない。, 2023), the TBS adaptation of the boys’ love manga by Mika, on which he is credited as one of the directors alongside Masahide Izumi and Takayoshi Tanasawa. Like Hiroaki Yuasa, he returned to the genre after Cherry Magic.
Cherry Magic! Thirty Years of Virginity Can Make You a Wizard?! aired on TV Tokyo from 9 October to 24 December 2020, twelve episodes that Hiroki Kazama, Hiroaki Yuasa and Hayashi shared between them, with music by Sumika Horiguchi. Eiji Akaso plays Kiyoshi Adachi and Keita Machida plays Yuichi Kurosawa.
I Cannot Reach You ran for eight episodes from 27 September to 15 November 2023 in TBS’s late-night Drama Stream slot. Kai Mari wrote it, Kentaro Maeda and Yu Kashiwagi play the leads, Kakeru and Yamato, and the theme song is “U&I” by Hi-Fi Un!corn. A month later, on 24 October 2023, Nippon TV’s Sindora slot began Kimi ga Shinu Made Ato 100 Nichi, which aired on Monday nights through 26 December with Hayashi as director. Yuto Takahashi, Hana Toyoshima, Mizuki Inoue and Maira Arai head the cast of that story of a high school student who can see how long living things have left to live.
Hayashi’s two Cherry Magic episodes are the two scripted by Satoko Okazaki.
He directed the fifth and sixth episodes of Cherry Magic! Thirty Years of Virginity Can Make You a Wizard?! in 2020, two of the twelve, while lead writer Erika Yoshida wrote the others.
Three years later he was one of the directors of the TBS series I Cannot Reach You, sharing it with Masahide Izumi and Takayoshi Tanasawa.
What I notice on his list is how steadily he works in late-night slots, from TBS to Nippon TV, and how different the stories are from one another. I would watch his two Cherry Magic episodes first, because they are where his name is easiest to place, and then I Cannot Reach You to see what he does with a full series of his own to share.
