BIOGRAPHY

Ann Lu (Chinese: 盧映安, also written 卢映安, Lu Ying-an) is a Taiwanese director, credited across all twelve episodes of Smile After Tears (轉過頭,幫你擦眼淚, 2026), the Boys’ Love series carried by GagaOOLala and Hami Video.

Co-directing a first series with an established name

Smile After Tears premiered on 20 May 2026, produced by BRAINS with TPOP Entertainment, written by 梨馡 and Xiao Yiwei, and led by Dennis Chang, Kai, Brian Cheng and Eason Zhang. It is a school story built around basketball, a transfer student, a band and a love triangle.

The directing credit is shared, and the other name on it is Chiang Ping-chen, whose profile we also hold and whose record runs to eight titles across the Taiwanese platform commissions of the last several years.

The only other credit is assistant director on When Grandma Becomes Grandpa (當阿嬤變成阿公, 2026), a Taiwanese comedy directed by Sharon Wu.

BLGLFlix editorial view

Two credits, and both of them say something about how Taiwan actually builds directors.

A twelve episode Boys’ Love series is a large first job. It was not handed over alone. The credit is shared with a director who has already made several of these for the same kind of platform, which is an apprenticeship in everything but name: the newcomer gets the episodes, the experienced one gets the responsibility, and the series gets both.

We have argued elsewhere here that Taiwan lacks a queer production pipeline. We have already had to soften that once, on finding a producer whose entire record sits inside GagaOOLala commissions. This page softens it further. A platform that pairs a new director with an established one, on a twelve episode series, is not improvising. It is training somebody.

Our own read is that this is the least visible and most consequential thing a small industry can do. Thailand grew its Boys’ Love directors by making so many series that people learned on the job. Taiwan does not have that volume, so it has to do it deliberately, one co-directing credit at a time. Whether there is a second series after this one is the thing worth watching, because that is the difference between a training scheme and a single kind gesture.

The other credit is worth a line of its own. When Grandma Becomes Grandpa is not a genre title and not a romance, and taking an assistant director job on a mainstream Taiwanese comedy in the same year as directing a Boys’ Love series is exactly the mixed diet that keeps a young Taiwanese director working.

The only source recording gender is a single database field, and we do not treat one source as enough on that question.
