Brando

BIOGRAPHY

Brando is a Hong Kong director, credited as director across all nine episodes of Ash (煙灰, 2026), the Cantonese Boys’ Love series produced by DreamReunion International for Youku International.

One credit, and a demanding one

Ash began airing on 14 August 2026. It is adapted from a web novel by Feng Nong, one of the most frequently adapted danmei authors in this catalogue, with FAY.TSE as executive producer.

The cast is the striking part. Alongside the leads, Yi Xuan as Mo Feihuan and Peng Ziye as Xu Lvetao, with Li Zesheng, Gu Yihang and Hou Yuanhao, the series carries two Hong Kong screen veterans: Justin Cheung Kin-sing, who has around sixty credits, as Liang Yi, and Pat Ha Man-jik, whose filmography runs back to 1982, as XuHuang Wanping.

BLGLFlix editorial view

This is a director with one credit on record, handed a nine episode Cantonese series adapted from a well-known novel, with two actors on the call sheet who between them have well over a hundred films behind them.

We have written elsewhere here about how newer Boys’ Love productions choose their crews. Some borrow veterans, which buys reliability. Some start new people, which buys unpredictability. Ash appears to have done both at once, and split them by department: a first-time director working with a cast that has been on Hong Kong sets for decades.

Our own read is that this is a deliberate arrangement rather than an accident, and a sensible one. Experienced actors need less direction and can carry a scene that is not perfectly blocked. A production that wants a new voice behind the camera can afford one precisely by not taking a second risk in front of it. Whether it worked is a question for the series, not for a credit list.

The wider point is one we keep arriving at. Cantonese-language Boys’ Love barely exists, so nobody in Hong Kong has a Boys’ Love directing career to point at. The only way a Cantonese Boys’ Love series gets made is by someone doing it for the first time.

Beyond the work there is nothing on record: no biography, no date, no photograph, no second credit and no verified account anywhere. We say so rather than pad the page.

TRIVIA

  • The record holds a single credit: director across all nine episodes of Ash.
  • Ash is one of very few Cantonese-language Boys’ Love series, a category that barely exists.
  • The series is adapted from a novel by Feng Nong, whose profile here records eight adaptations.
  • The cast pairs newcomers with two Hong Kong veterans, Justin Cheung Kin-sing and Pat Ha Man-jik, whose careers began in 2010 and 1982 respectively.
  • It goes out on Youku International, produced by DreamReunion International, rather than on a mainland broadcaster.
  • A search for this name on any film database returns the American actor Marlon Brando first. The correct record was found through the series’ crew data instead.
