A Thai actor in a Cantonese period piece financed out of the mainland is a sign of how far this industry now reaches across borders.

Sorawit Prapakamol, known as Kao, born 30 May 2002, appears in Sammy’s Children’s Day, the EASTONE Entertainment production set in the Kowloon Walled City of the 1980s and released through GagaOOLala, Viki and YouTube. The same year he plays Juang in the Thai period drama Love Destiny.

Thailand exports performers into this genre the way it exports the format itself. Chinese and Hong Kong productions that cannot rely on domestic promotion for boys love material still want the audience Thai boys love built, and casting a Thai face is one way to reach it.
