The skills line on this record is the most informative thing on it. Tate is stage combat as practised in Japanese theatre, a discipline with its own schools and its own choreographic vocabulary, and haradori is a comic performance form. Neither is a hobby and neither is something an agency invents for a profile. They are the marks of somebody trained for the stage, which is a different preparation from the modelling and idol routes that fill most of this catalogue, and it goes some way to explaining a filmography that includes a Heian-period prince, a detective procedural and two queer dramas inside three years.

His work also sits at both ends of Japanese television at once. Hikaru Kimi e is an NHK taiga, the most prestigious commission the medium offers. Kanojo ga Suki na mono wa is a queer story with a much smaller audience and a harder subject. That range is only available to an actor who is being cast for what he can do rather than for who follows him.
