Emiko Shirai
BIOGRAPHY
Emiko Shirai (白井映美子) is a Japanese television director. Two credits are on the public record, and the remarkable thing about them is that they are the same size, the same length and the same date.
Both are ten episode series and both premiered on 7 April 2026. One is the live action Unexpectedly Naughty Fukami (やたらやらしい深見くん), adapted from Ayaka Matsumoto’s manga, produced by MINY MIX CREATIVE for Tokyo MX and DMM TV, with a screenplay by Nao Shioji and Kazuhiro Ito as executive producer. Kashio Atsuki and Yu Miyazaki lead. TMDB classifies it as boys’ love (bl), slice of life and adapted from both a manga and an anime, the anime being the eight episode version broadcast a year earlier.
The other is Inukai-san wa Kakure Dekiai Joshi (犬飼さんは隠れ溺愛上司), also ten episodes, also from 7 April 2026, also on Tokyo MX, and also executive produced by Kazuhiro Ito. It carries no queer classification on record, and none is claimed for it here.
Apart from an IMDb identifier, nm17754721, the record carries nothing personal: no birth details, no biography, no accounts, gender unset. Wikipedia returned only unrelated animation articles. The fields stay empty.
BLGLFlix editorial view
Two ten episode series, delivered by the same director, premiering on the same day. That is the single clearest piece of evidence this site has found for what Japanese short form drama actually is.
The Kazuhiro Ito profile documented six consecutive quarters of short form manga adaptations under one executive producer, mostly on Tokyo MX. The Nao Shioji profile showed a writer moving between them at three month intervals. This page supplies the missing piece: the director was not assigned one project per quarter either. On 7 April 2026, two of the slot’s shows went to air with the same person credited on both.
Which means the BL series was not a special commission or a statement of intent. It was one of two productions this director had in the same cycle, from the same producer, on the same channel, delivered on the same day. The other one is a straight romance. Nobody at any point had to decide that queer drama was worth making, because the question never came up in that form. A manga was licensed, a slot needed filling, and a director shot both.
Anyone hoping for a heroic version of how BL gets made will find that deflating. We think it is the opposite. The moment a genre stops requiring a champion and starts being handled by whoever is on the rota is the moment it has actually arrived. Thailand reached that point through its terrestrial networks, as the Channel 3 and Channel 7 credits on this site now show. Japan reached it through publishing and a quarterly schedule. Korea and China have not reached it at all, which is why their queer productions still read as feats.
