Unexpectedly Naughty Fukami
SYNOPSIS
Unexpectedly Naughty Fukami (やたらやらしい深見くん, Yatara Yarashii Fukami-kun) is a 2026 Japanese workplace BL romantic comedy adapted from Ayaka Matsumoto's ongoing manga of the same name. At its centre is Kaji Akihiro (Kashio Atsuki), a sales department ace admired across his Tokyo office for his looks, his charm and his effortless way with clients. What his colleagues never see is the private arithmetic behind that smile: Kaji quietly ranks everyone he meets on a numerical attractiveness scale, and almost nobody clears the bar. Sitting well below it is Yu Fukami (Yu Miyazaki), a quiet, unremarkable coworker he has barely registered in years of sharing the same floor.
When a manager pairs the two for an overnight business trip, Kaji resigns himself to two forgettable days of polite small talk. The trip does not go that way. Away from the office, an after-hours conversation reveals that Fukami holds the same guarded, faintly cynical view of love and casual attachment Kaji has spent years perfecting, and the man who emerges once the workday ends bears almost no resemblance to the colleague at the next desk. What starts as curiosity between two people who each pride themselves on feeling nothing slowly, clumsily, turns into something neither will name aloud. Back in Tokyo the balance keeps shifting: the scoring system stops working, Fukami's daytime blankness starts to look deliberate, and every attempt to keep things casual only tightens the knot.
Directed by Emiko Shirai from a screenplay by Nao Shioji and produced by Kazuhiro Ito, the ten-episode late-night miniseries premiered on Tokyo MX on 7 April 2026 and ran weekly through its 9 June finale. Its short episodes keep the register light and quick, closer to office farce than melodrama, while the mature themes it raises, desire, self-worth, the fear of being genuinely seen, are handled with a dry, deadpan touch rather than spelled out. In Japan the series streams on DMM TV, TVer, U-NEXT, FOD and Prime Video Japan, with an official English-subtitled release on GagaOOLala. It extends a franchise that began on ComicFesta in December 2022 and has since run through manga, a short-form anime and now live action, with Seven Seas Entertainment publishing an English print edition in September 2026. The title teases the gap between the Fukami everyone overlooks and the one Kaji cannot stop thinking about.
