A first credit that is also a lead is worth pausing over, because it is not how acting careers usually start and it is becoming a recognisable feature of Korean BL.

Look at the two leads of this one series side by side. Gu Do-hyung came to Backdoor from supporting parts in a twenty four episode KBS2 family drama and a twelve episode JTBC romcom, finishing one seven weeks before starting the other. Jang In-kyu arrived with nothing on record at all. One actor stepping down in scale to step up in billing, one actor starting at the top of a very small production. Both playing leads, in the same show, on YouTube.

That is what a genre with no established casting route looks like from the inside. Thailand has GMMTV, which signs people young and moves them through a slate. Korea has this: a small production company, a free platform, and a cast assembled from whoever is available and right, whether that is a working television actor between jobs or someone with no credits yet. This site has already recorded a third variant of the same improvisation, a BL web series casting two of its five actors out of a reality dating show.

The honest limit of this page is that one credit tells us almost nothing about a person. What it tells us about is the production, and about an industry where a debut and a leading role can be the same thing because nobody is guarding the door.
