SixTeenSeven (Thai: ซิกทีนเซเว่น) is a Thai novelist and the author of Petrichor (หยดฝนกลิ่นสนิม), the Girls’ Love web novel serialised from 10 November 2022 and now complete, which became a ten episode television series two years later.

The adaptation premiered on 23 November 2024 on ONE 31 and iQIYI International, produced by iQIYI Pictures with TV Thunder and directed by Pongsatorn Thongjaroen and Pannares Ruchirananta. Engfa Waraha and Charlotte Austin lead, with Malin Sae-lim and Rina Chatamonchai. The screenplay is credited to Sammon.

The novel was serialised on MaReads under the author’s own account and is also carried on ReadAWrite.

A Girls’ Love thriller, adapted by another novelist

Petrichor is not a school romance. Its own record carries murder, death and thriller alongside the Girls’ Love classification, which makes it one of the few titles in this catalogue where the genre sits inside a crime story rather than a coming-of-age one.

The adaptation credit is the other unusual thing. The screenplay was written by Sammon, a novelist first and best known as an author in her own right. So the chain here runs novel to novel-writer to screen: one author’s book turned into television by another author, rather than by a studio’s staff writer.

For comparison, a Japanese manga usually waits three to eight years for an adaptation, and often never gets one. What that speed reveals is that Thai Girls’ Love commissioning is not really commissioning at all. It is acquisition. The studios are not developing stories, they are reading what already has an audience on MaReads and ReadAWrite and buying it.

We keep finding this pattern and we think it is the single most useful thing to understand about the form. Elsewhere in this catalogue we have logged one Girls’ Love novelist with eight adaptations, another with three inside a year, and now this. The novelists are not feeding a Thai Girls’ Love industry. They are, for the moment, most of what that industry is.

The rest of the production tells the same story from other directions. The lead, Engfa Waraha, came to acting from pageantry, having won Miss Grand Thailand in 2022 and placed first runner-up at Miss Grand International the same year, and made her screen debut only in 2023. An international platform, iQIYI, co-produced. So a free web serial, a novelist adapting a novelist, a pageant winner two years into an acting career, and a foreign streamer all met on one crime thriller. Our own read is that this is how a genre stops being niche: not by getting bigger, but by becoming useful to enough separate businesses at once that no single one of them can decide to stop.
