About this archive
Behind a large part of what is filmed in this genre sits a book. The novelist credit marks the writer of that original prose, whether it was published commercially, serialised on a web platform chapter by chapter, or released as a light novel with accompanying illustration. In several markets the web serial is the dominant form, and a readership built there is what makes a work attractive to adapt in the first place.
What happens next depends on the deal. A novelist may write the screenplay themselves, consult on it, or hand over the rights entirely and watch the adaptation from outside. Long novels are routinely condensed, restructured or split across seasons, and where a book has a devoted readership those changes are scrutinised closely. Pen names are the norm, and some writers work in more than one form, producing audio drama scripts or comic scenarios alongside prose.
This credit is the most reliable way to trace a story backwards. Following it shows every adaptation a single text produced, across drama, animation, comics and audio, and shows which writers have had more than one work taken up rather than a single successful title.
