Tomoki Hasegawa has been scoring since at least 2001, through Suicide Club, NANA, Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, Magician’s Academy, Mysterious Girlfriend X, Danchi Tomoo, Locodol, 18if and Let’s Make a Mug Too, and wrote the music for the twelve-episode Cherry Magic! anime at Satelight in 2024.

A composer’s work is present in every minute of every episode and almost never named by the people watching. Music does most of the tonal work in an adaptation like this one, deciding whether a scene reads as comic or as something quieter, and the decision belongs to a man in his sixties who has been making it for twenty-five years.

NANA is worth pulling out of that list. It is one of the defining josei anime and it shaped how a generation of readers expected adaptations of women’s manga to sound. The person who scored it also scored a BL comedy about a thirty-year-old office worker, and the site records both because both are on the same career.
