Friendly Rivalry

Friendly Rivalry (선의의 경쟁) is a 2025 South Korean mystery-thriller drama that first streamed on U+ Mobile TV from February 10 to March 6, 2025, before reaching international audiences on Netflix, Rakuten Viki, and OnDemandKorea. Produced by YLAB, the studio behind Netflix's Kingdom, together with STUDIO X+U, the sixteen-episode series adapts a 2020 Naver webtoon of the same name. Set at the fictional Chaehwa Girls' High School, it follows the volatile, emotionally charged bond between two teenage girls navigating South Korea's brutal college entrance exam system, a bond the story frames as equal parts friendship, rivalry, and repressed romantic attraction. Unlike many Korean youth dramas that keep close female friendships firmly platonic, Friendly Rivalry, often described by fans and critics as an atypical GL title, lets the tension between its two leads carry unmistakable queer undertones, including a pivotal dream sequence that reframes their relationship in the fourth episode. Note that "friendly rivalry" is also a common English-language idiom for good-natured competition between peers; this page covers only the 2025 Korean television series of that name.

Yoo Je-yi (Lee Hye-ri) is Chaehwa's reigning academic star and the daughter of powerful hospital administrator Yoo Tae-joon; brilliant and coldly self-possessed, she rules the school's social hierarchy long before the story's central relationship begins. Woo Seul-gi (Chung Su-bin) is the transfer student who upends that order, an orphanage-raised outsider searching for the truth behind her father's suspicious death, a search that leads her directly into Je-yi's orbit and, eventually, into evidence implicating Je-yi's own father. Joo Ye-ri (Kang Hye-won) and Choi Gyeong (Oh Woo-ri) round out the school's central cast, two classmates whose own ambitions complicate the group's shifting alliances, while Nam Byeong-jin (Choi Young-jae), a figure from Seul-gi's orphanage past, resurfaces to pull her toward more dangerous territory. Yoo Tae-joon (Kim Tae-hun) anchors the series' conspiracy plot as its primary antagonist, a man whose reach extends into cheating rings, drug distribution, and unauthorized medical procedures tied to the exam-committee deaths Seul-gi is investigating.

Friendly Rivalry was directed by Kim Tae-hee from a script by Kim Tae-hee and Min Ye-ji, and it built a devoted following through its final stretch, in which Je-yi and her younger sister leap into the sea on live television in a last, theatrical bid to expose their father's crimes, an ending that leaves Je-yi's fate deliberately unresolved. The performances of Lee Hye-ri and Chung Su-bin were singled out by South Korean award bodies, with the pair winning Best Couple honors at both the 2025 APAN Star Awards and the Korea Drama Awards, and Chung Su-bin separately winning Best New Actress recognition the same year. As of this writing, no additional season has been officially confirmed by YLAB, U+ Mobile TV, or Netflix, despite persistent fan speculation about a follow-up.
