About this archive
Taiwan was early. Queer stories reached its films and TV long before BL became a marketing label, its feature films travelled to international festivals, and it became the first place in Asia to recognise same sex marriage. You can feel that in the shows: they tend to treat a love story between two men or two women simply as a drama, no special label needed.
Series come from TV channels, film companies and streaming services, and original scripts are more common here than in some neighbouring industries, although adaptations of Taiwanese novels turn up too. The movie route is still very much alive.
Actors here rarely stick to one lane. You will find people like Edward Chen, Hsu Kai, Kurt Huang, Jake Hsu and Darren Chiu working across film, TV, theatre and music, and groups like F.F.O and CRYXTAL from the Mandarin music side. My tip: a Taiwanese profile often has only one or two BL or GL credits inside a long mainstream career. Treat it like a map and follow whatever else catches your eye.
