Two characters exchange bodies, and everything they assumed about each other has to be lived from the inside instead. The swap must drive the plot rather than occupy a single episode.
The premise is unusually well suited to BL and GL, because it puts desire and identity in the same frame and refuses to separate them. A character has to conduct the other’s relationships, keep the other’s secrets and answer to the other’s family, and what began as farce tends to arrive somewhere serious. It also allows a story to examine gender and expectation without ever arguing about them directly.
Expect comedy first, rules about how the swap works, and a late reluctance to change back. Fantasy and supernatural tags usually accompany it.
