About this archive
Chinese BL on this page has one giant at its centre: Mo Dao Zu Shi. You can follow it as a web novel, a manhua, two animated series and, through The Untamed, a live action drama where the central bond is carried as brotherhood. That is a good way to understand Chinese BL in general. The same story moves between formats, because each format can say things a little differently.
Around that giant sits a fresh crop of web series, often short and often reaching international fans through GagaOOLala. The range is fun: palace fantasy, time travel, a workplace reunion and youth melodrama. Several are made together with Hong Kong, Taiwan or Singapore, like Kiss or Kill, Sammy’s Children’s Day, Kill to Love and Double Helix.
Newer titles like Till I See You, The Missing Piece, Journey With You and The Summer you Kissed Me are worth a look too. My tip: if you have time for an epic, start with
The Untamed, then read or watch Mo Dao Zu Shi to see the story from another angle. Snacks for many evenings recommended.
