SYNOPSIS

The Untamed (Chinese: 陈情令, pinyin: Chén Qíng Lìng) is a 2019 Chinese xianxia fantasy drama produced by Tencent Penguin Pictures, adapted from Mo Xiang Tong Xiu's danmei novel Mo Dao Zu Shi. The 50-episode series streamed on Tencent Video and WeTV and became one of the most widely watched Chinese dramas of its decade internationally.

Sixteen years after his death, Wei Wuxian (Xiao Zhan) is summoned back into a body not his own and finds himself standing beside Lan Wangji (Wang Yibo), the one person who never accepted the story the clans told about him. What begins as a string of unexplained killings pulls the two into re-opening the tragedy that ended Wei Wuxian's first life, and the series moves between the present investigation and the years the two spent as students, rivals and finally the only ally each had left. Around them the great clans manoeuvre: Jiang Cheng (Wang Zhuocheng), Jiang Yanli (Xuan Lu), Lan Xichen (Liu Haikuan), Wen Qing (Meng Ziyi) and Wen Ning (Yu Bin) each carry part of what went wrong.

BLGLFLIX classifies The Untamed as bromance rather than BL, and the distinction matters. The source novel tells the same story as a romance between the two men, but Chinese broadcast regulation does not permit depicting one on screen. The adaptation therefore rewrites the central relationship as an intense sworn bond, the devotion, the sacrifice and the shared history all remain, the romance is never stated. Viewers coming from the novel should know what was changed; viewers coming to it fresh will find one of the most closely watched male partnerships in Chinese television.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is The Untamed about?

The Untamed (陈情令) is a 2019 Chinese xianxia drama. Sixteen years after his death, Wei Wuxian is summoned back into another man's body and reunites with Lan Wangji, the one person who never believed the version of events the clans agreed on. A string of unexplained killings pulls the two into re-opening the tragedy that ended Wei Wuxian's first life, told across a present-day investigation and a long flashback to their student years.

Is The Untamed a BL series?

Not as broadcast. BLGLFLIX classifies it as bromance. In the source novel, Mo Xiang Tong Xiu's Mo Dao Zu Shi, the two leads are a couple, but Chinese broadcast regulation does not permit depicting that on screen, so the adaptation rewrites the central relationship as a sworn bond. The devotion and the shared history remain; the romance is never stated. That is why you will find the series described as BL, as danmei and as bromance in different places, and all three refer to the same show at different stages of adaptation.

How many episodes does The Untamed have?

50 episodes of about 45 minutes each, roughly 37 hours in total. It is a completed single season. A condensed 20-episode special edition was also released on WeTV on 25 December 2019.

When did The Untamed air?

It ran from 27 June to 7 August 2019 on Tencent Video, and streams internationally on WeTV.

Who stars in The Untamed?

Xiao Zhan plays Wei Wuxian and Wang Yibo plays Lan Wangji. The supporting cast includes Wang Zhuocheng as Jiang Cheng, Xuan Lu as Jiang Yanli, Liu Haikuan as Lan Xichen, Meng Ziyi as Wen Qing, Yu Bin as Wen Ning and Song Jiyang as Xiao Xingchen.

Who are the main characters in The Untamed?

The story is organised around five cultivation clans, and most viewer questions are about who belongs to which one.
Yunmeng Jiang: Wei Wuxian (Xiao Zhan), Jiang Cheng (Wang Zhuocheng), Jiang Yanli (Xuan Lu), Jiang Fengmian (Lu Jianmin), Yu Ziyuan (Zhang Jingtong).
Gusu Lan: Lan Wangji (Wang Yibo), Lan Xichen (Liu Haikuan), Lan Qiren (Huang Ziteng), Lan Sizhui (Zheng Fanxing), Lan Jingyi (Guo Cheng).
Lanling Jin: Jin Guangyao (Zhu Zanjin), Jin Zixuan (Cao Yuchen), Jin Guangshan (Shen Xiaohai), Qin Su (Jin Luying), Jin Ling (Qi Peixin).
Qinghe Nie: Nie Mingjue (Wang Yizhou), Nie Huaisang (Ji Li).
Qishan Wen: Wen Ruohan (Xiu Qing), Wen Chao (He Peng), Wen Qing (Meng Ziyi), Wen Ning (Yu Bin).
Outside the clans: Xiao Xingchen (Song Jiyang), Song Lan (Li Bowen), Xue Yang (Wang Haoxuan) and A-Qing (Chen Zhuoxuan), whose storyline is largely self-contained.

What novel is The Untamed based on?

It adapts Mo Xiang Tong Xiu's web novel Mo Dao Zu Shi (魔道祖师), also translated as Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation or Founder of Diabolism. The author is credited on the series.

Is The Untamed on Netflix?

It has been licensed to Netflix in a number of territories, alongside WeTV, Viki and Amazon Prime Video, while Tencent Video carries it in China. Streaming licences for Chinese dramas are regional and time-limited, so the honest answer is that it depends on your country and on when you look. Check your own region's listing rather than assuming. WeTV is the most consistently available option internationally.

Where can I watch The Untamed?

WeTV internationally and Tencent Video in China are the primary platforms. It has also appeared on Netflix, Viki and Amazon Prime Video in selected regions. Availability varies by region and by licensing window.

What is the difference between The Untamed and Mo Dao Zu Shi?

Mo Dao Zu Shi is the source novel, in which Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji are in a romantic relationship. The Untamed is the live-action adaptation, in which that relationship is rewritten as a sworn bond to comply with Chinese broadcast rules. The live-action also reorders events, opening on the present-day timeline and telling the past as a long flashback, and it expands several supporting characters.

Is there an animated version of The Untamed?

Yes. The donghua is titled Mo Dao Zu Shi, after the novel rather than after the live-action. It was produced by Tencent Penguin Pictures with B.C May Pictures and ran for three seasons: Qian Chen Pian (15 episodes, July to October 2018), Xian Yun Pian (8 episodes, August 2019) and Wan Jie Pian (12 episodes, August to October 2021). A chibi spin-off, Mo Dao Zu Shi Q, ran 30 episodes between July 2020 and January 2021. The first two seasons were released on Crunchyroll on 11 December 2024. The donghua stays closer to the novel's tone than the live-action does.

Will there be a season 2 of The Untamed?

No second season has been announced or produced. The 50-episode run adapts the novel to its conclusion, so the story does not leave a sequel hook. What does exist is the 20-episode condensed special edition and two spin-off web films.

Are there any Untamed spin-off films?

Two, both released in 2019. Fatal Journey follows the Qinghe Nie brothers and Jin Guangyao, with Ji Li as Nie Huaisang, Wang Yizhou as Nie Mingjue and Zhu Zanjin as Jin Guangyao. The Living Dead follows Wen Ning and Lan Sizhui, with Yu Bin and Zheng Fanxing reprising their roles alongside Wang Yifei. Both feature cast members from the series and sit alongside the main story rather than continuing it.

Where was The Untamed filmed?

Filming ran from April to August 2018 at Hengdian World Studios in Zhejiang province, the largest film backlot in China, with additional location work in Guizhou. The mountain and waterfall scenery associated with the Gusu Lan sect comes largely from the Guizhou shoot.

Does The Untamed have a happy ending?

Mild spoiler. The ending is generally read as hopeful rather than tragic: the central mystery is resolved, Wei Wuxian is cleared of the worst of what he was blamed for, and he and Lan Wangji end the series together, travelling. Because the adaptation cannot state a romance, the final scene is deliberately open, and where the novel states the relationship the series only implies it. Several supporting characters do not survive the story, so it is not an ending without cost.

What is the theme song of The Untamed?

The ending theme is "Unrestrained" (无羁), performed as a duet by the two leads, Xiao Zhan and Wang Yibo. The score is by composer Lin Hai. The soundtrack was released digitally in July 2019, in an instrumental edition in August 2019 and physically in November 2019.

What age rating does The Untamed have?

This site records 15+, converted from the South Korean broadcast classification. European classification boards placed it between 12 and 16.

Are Xiao Zhan and Wang Yibo a couple in real life?

No such claim is made here. They are co-stars. Neither has stated a romantic relationship, and BLGLFLIX does not publish speculation about anyone's private life.

Is The Untamed finished?

Yes. All 50 episodes aired in 2019 and the story reaches a complete ending.
