What happens

Wei Wuxian dies branded the villain of a war. Thirteen years later a summoning ritual pulls him back into a borrowed body, and he finds himself beside Lan Wangji, unravelling a chain of killings that leads back to what actually happened to him. The story is Mo Xiang Tong Xiu's novel, redrawn in full colour as a manhua with art by Luo Di Cheng Qiu.

It ran on Kuaikan Manhua from 2017 to 2022 across 259 chapters. Clan robes, sword work and the Burial Mounds are drawn on the page instead of described in prose. The platform is built for phones and vertical scrolling, so each chapter was designed as a continuous downward read. Story credit goes to Mo Xiang Tong Xiu and art credit to Luo Di Cheng Qiu, and the comic works from the novel rather than from any screen version.

Seven Seas Entertainment publishes the English edition as Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation: Mo Dao Zu Shi (The Comic). The licence was announced on 25 May 2022. Volume 1 came out on 7 March 2023, and eight volumes were in print by 3 December 2024. The English books are large-trim, full-colour volumes with French flaps and foil-embellished covers, and Volume 1 runs 216 pages.

The manhua is the version that puts the world of Mo Dao Zu Shi on the page in full colour.

The novel describes a world it cannot show, and the donghua animates it across three seasons. The manhua draws it, in colour, at whatever level of detail a page can hold.

The format changes the pacing: 259 chapters is a lot of story told in short instalments, and the flashback structure is spread across many of them. The collected volumes gather it into eight books.

Spread across eight English volumes, the 259 Chinese chapters average roughly 32 chapters a book, so each volume gathers a substantial stretch of the story and the two timelines can be read in larger sittings than the scrolling original allowed.

Because the art carries what the novel narrates, sequences that prose handles through a paragraph of description become a single spread here: the clan robes, the swords and the Burial Mounds are seen rather than imagined. It suits readers who like to see a fantasy world drawn in full, and who enjoy following a long mystery a few chapters at a time.

Read it if you want the story with the visual design filled in. Read the novel first if you want the relationship as written.

English readers reached this version six years after the Chinese serialisation began.

The comic ran in Chinese from 2017 to 2022, with art by Luo Di Cheng Qiu. It works from Mo Xiang Tong Xiu's novel rather than from any screen version. Seven Seas Entertainment opened the licensed English edition on 7 March 2023.

Eight volumes were in print by December 2024, under two years later.

Seven Seas also handles the English prose edition of Mo Dao Zu Shi (Web Novel) across five volumes, so a reader can follow both the novel and the comic through a single translation programme.

The credit line is where the two formats part company. The prose carries one name, while the comic carries an author and a named artist working to that text. The animated version is Mo Dao Zu Shi (Donghua).

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Where was the manhua originally serialised?

On Kuaikan Manhua, a Chinese webcomic platform founded in 2014 by the cartoonist Anni Chen. The comic ran there from 2017 to 2022.

Who is credited on the comic?

Story to Mo Xiang Tong Xiu, art to Luo Di Cheng Qiu. The novelist wrote the source text and the artist drew the adaptation.

Is there an English edition?

Yes. Seven Seas Entertainment publishes it as Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation: Mo Dao Zu Shi (The Comic). The licence was announced on 25 May 2022, the first volume appeared on 7 March 2023, and eight volumes had been released by December 2024.

Why is 259 chapters shorter than it sounds?

Each chapter is a short run of images made for vertical scrolling on a phone, not several thousand words of prose.

Where can the comic be read legally in English?

Through Seven Seas Entertainment, which lists the series page and the volume one page. The original Kuaikan serialisation was published in Chinese.

Where a title can be watched, and who is credited on it, may have changed since publication, as our disclaimer explains.

Themes

A comic serialised on Kuaikan Manhua is built for a phone. The platform is mobile first and uses the vertical scrolling format, so the reading unit is a continuous downward movement, each beat arriving alone and in sequence.

The Seven Seas paperbacks give a second reading experience. The same panels are reflowed onto facing pages in a large trim size, where the eye takes in several at once and can move backwards across a scene, so sequence becomes composition.

A reader who followed the comic on the platform between 2017 and 2022 and a reader who picks up the collected books receive the story at a different rhythm, with identical art.

How it was made

The comic ran as a webcomic on Kuaikan Manhua, a Chinese platform founded in 2014 by the cartoonist Anni Chen and reported in 2021 to have around 340 million registered users. Seven Seas Entertainment announced the English licence on 25 May 2022, its first move into danmei comics, and described the planned print edition as a large trim volume of more than 200 full-colour pages with French flaps and a foil-embellished cover, priced at 19.99 US dollars and 24.99 Canadian dollars.
