What happens

Payback (페이백) opens on a debt collector who has already lost. Lee Yuhan spent his teenage years working for a loan shark, leaning on people who could not pay and taking whatever they had left. That work followed him home: a debtor he had squeezed came back for revenge, and Yuhan's younger brother died for it. What remains afterwards is a man in his late twenties carrying his mother's hospital bills, a debt he inherited rather than chose, and a habit of treating whatever happens to him as deserved.

The story restarts five years later, when Yuhan learns that his former roommate Song Myeong-shin was not a bystander to that night. Myeong-shin has since become a working actor, insulated by an agency and a manufactured public image, and the distance between the two lives is what drives the plot. Yuhan has no money, no leverage and no plan. What he has is an offer from Yun Je-i, an executive inside the entertainment company that manages Myeong-shin, who is willing to place Yuhan close enough to do real damage. The arrangement is transactional from the first chapter, and each man knows the other is using it. Yuhan buys his way into Myeong-shin's world with dependence on Je-i, and the further the revenge advances, the less it resembles justice.

samK's original web novel is built around the cost of that bargain rather than its payoff, and Fujoking's manhwa adaptation keeps the shape. The entertainment-industry setting is not decoration: contracts, publicity cycles and the question of who owns whose career are the instruments these characters use to hurt each other. The main run closed at ninety-five episodes in November 2024, and a fourteen-chapter side story serialised as Abduction ran from March to August 2025, following Yuhan and Je-i past the point where the main plot stopped.

Payback follows a former debt collector who sets out to take revenge on the man he holds responsible for his brother's death, using an entertainment executive as his way in. The two leads are tied by money and leverage long before anything else, and the story keeps that bargain at the centre.

The manhwa

samK's web novel became Fujoking's manhwa, published by Kidari Studio. The main run is 95 episodes and finished on 20 November 2024. The Abduction side story adds 14 chapters, ran from 20 March to 20 August 2025, and stays with Yuhan and Je-i after the main story has resolved.

The entertainment-industry setting carries the plot. Contracts, publicity and the question of who controls whose career are the tools Yuhan, Myeong-shin and Je-i use against each other, and the revenge moves forward through that economy of leverage.

What to Know Going In

The story deals with revenge, violence connected to debt collection, the death of a family member and a morally compromised relationship. The age gap and the power imbalance between Yuhan and Je-i run through the whole series.

  • Read it if: you want a BL where the romance is entangled with money, leverage and consequence, and you are not looking for comfort.
  • Skip it if: mature themes, depicted violence or a story built around a family death are things you avoid.
  • Best entry point: Lezhin Comics in English, or Bomtoon if you read Korean and want the original serialisation as first published.

Final Score: 8.6/10

Payback ran as a serial for more than four years before it completed.

The first chapter landed on 2 June 2021 and the last on 20 August 2025. Kidari Studio published 95 main episodes, a prologue and a 14 chapter Abduction side story, 109 chapters in total. Seven print volumes collect that run for readers who want it off a screen.

Four platforms carry the comic: Bomtoon, Lezhin Comics, Naver Series and Mr Blue. Serialisation closed in August 2025, and the Thai live action adaptation, Payback, followed in 2026, so the screen version started from a source that was already complete on the page.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is the story complete?

Yes. The main run of 95 episodes ended on 20 November 2024, and the Abduction side story finished on 20 August 2025.

How is the chapter count made up?

In two parts. The main run is 95 episodes and is complete, with a separate 14-chapter side story called Abduction on top, giving 109 chapters plus a prologue. Kidari Studio also issued seven print volumes.

Over what period did it run?

More than four years. Serialisation began on 2 June 2021 and the final chapter landed on 20 August 2025, so the comic was still publishing while the Thai live-action adaptation was in production.

Who made it, and who wrote the original?

samK wrote the source web novel and is credited as writer, with Fujoking illustrating. The Thai series and the novel are covered separately as Payback and Payback (Novel).

Where can it be read legally?

Bomtoon carries the original Korean serialisation, Lezhin Comics has the official English edition, and Mr Blue carries a revised Korean edition. Naver Series also carries it.

Is there more than one Korean edition?

Yes. A revised edition, 페이백 [개정판], sits alongside the original serialisation, so the same chapters appear on more than one Korean platform.

How much longer is it than the television version?

Roughly ten times: ninety-five main chapters against the ten episodes of the 2026 Thai series.

Is there a live-action version?

Yes. A ten-episode Thai series titled Payback aired on One 31 from 30 May to 1 August 2026.

Themes

A vertical scroll hands the pace to the reader's thumb. Nothing arrives until it is pulled up the screen, so in a story about a man walking knowingly into rooms that will cost him something, the reader performs the approach instead of watching it happen. A page turn is a decision taken once and finished; a scroll is a decision being taken continuously, at a speed the reader has to keep choosing.

The finished work exists in two published states: the original Bomtoon serialisation and the revised edition, the gaejeongpan carried by Mr Blue. A revenge story suits a second pass, given that its whole subject is a man going back over something already done and trying to settle it differently.
