What happens

Payback (페이백) is the Korean BL web novel samK wrote before any of the adaptations existed. Lee Yuhan is a young man who spent his school years working for a loan shark instead of studying, collecting money by force from people who had none. One of those debtors came back for him, and Yuhan's younger brother died in his place. The novel begins with the aftermath: a man who has decided the death was his fault, working himself into the ground to pay off a debt he did not create and hospital bills for a mother who is not going to recover.

Five years on, Yuhan finds out that his old roommate Song Myeong-shin knew more about that night than he ever admitted. Myeong-shin has become an actor in the meantime, protected by an agency and an image, and there is no route from Yuhan's life into his. Then Yun Je-i, an executive at the company that manages Myeong-shin, offers Yuhan a way in. The offer is not charity and Yuhan does not treat it as such. What follows is a slow accounting of what he trades away, autonomy first, and then the version of himself that still believed the revenge was about justice.

The novel stays inside Yuhan's head for long stretches, so his self-loathing reads as a fixed condition rather than a plot problem waiting to be solved, and Je-i stays opaque: the reader gets Yuhan's guesses about him. samK first released the book as a self-published three-volume set in 2010, with a reprint in 2013 and a spin-off volume in 2015, and for over a decade it circulated as a doujinshi title rather than a commercial one. Pilyeon Management issued the complete work through Ridibooks in November 2022 as a six-volume digital edition, alongside the two-volume sequel Paid Payback, and it won a BL novel e-book prize at the 2023 Ridi Awards. Fujoking's manhwa adaptation had begun serialising the year before.

samK's Payback is the original of the story: a novel first self-published in 2010 and issued by Pilyeon Management as a complete six-volume digital edition through Ridibooks in November 2022.

What prose adds to the story

The novel stays inside Yuhan's head for long stretches. His guilt over his brother's death reads as a settled belief rather than a wound: he has decided the death was his fault and arranges his life around paying for it. Je-i stays opaque, and the reader gets Yuhan's guesses about his motives instead of confirmation.

How it reached readers

The route to this edition is unusual. samK self-published the book as a three-volume set in 2010, reprinted it in 2013 and added a spin-off volume in 2015, and for more than a decade it circulated as a doujinshi title before going commercial. The six volumes then arrived together as a finished set rather than as instalments, so a reader can follow the whole arc of the bargain in one continuous run. The commercial edition won a BL novel e-book prize at the 2023 Ridi Awards, and its cover illustration is credited to the artist SAN rather than to manhwa illustrator Fujoking.

The story has also travelled between formats. A Korean drama CD followed in 2021, with Yun Dong-gi voicing Yun Je-i and Jeon Seung-hwa voicing Lee Yuhan, and the manhwa and the Thai series came after it.

What to Know Going In

The relationship between Yuhan and Je-i is built on a debt, an age gap and an imbalance of power, and Yuhan accepts a great deal because he believes he has no right to refuse. The book holds together as a story about what a person accepts once he has decided he is guilty. Paid Payback, the two-volume sequel, continues the story.

  • Read it if: you have finished the manhwa and want the version with Yuhan's reasoning on the page, and you read Korean.
  • Also suits: readers who are comfortable with a romance whose balance of power stays uneven for long stretches. No English edition exists, so this is a route for Korean readers.
  • Start with: the six-volume Ridibooks set, then Paid Payback.

Final Score: 8.9/10

The novel came first, sixteen years before the first screen version.

samK posted the first instalment on 27 June 2010 and the last on 27 December 2015. A drama CD arrived in 2021, the same year Fujoking began serialising the manhwa, Payback (Manhwa). Pilyeon Management issued the commercial digital edition in 2022, and the Thai live action series, Payback, followed in 2026.

The novel and the manhwa carry the same Korean title, 페이백, and both adaptations grew out of those six volumes.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is there an English edition of the novel?

No official English translation exists. The English-language release of the story is the manhwa on Lezhin Comics.

How long did this novel exist before a publisher took it?

Twelve years. samK self-published it from 27 June 2010, with the run closing on 27 December 2015, and Pilyeon Management issued the commercial digital edition only in 2022.

Why is the year 2010 when the comic is 2021?

Because this is the original, not a novelisation. The novel came first by more than a decade; the manhwa illustrated by Fujoking followed in 2021, and the Thai live-action series in 2026.

What else came out of it?

Three further works. A drama CD adaptation was produced in 2021, the manhwa began the same year, and samK went on to write a sequel novel, Paid Payback (페이드 페이백), continuing the story in prose.

How large is the complete novel?

Six volumes in the commercial digital edition, which Ridibooks carries as a single complete set. Naver Series also carries it.

Who voiced the drama CD?

Yun Dong-gi voiced Yun Je-i and Jeon Seung-hwa voiced Lee Yuhan.

Who published the different editions?

samK self-published the original, and Pilyeon Management (필연매니지먼트) issued the commercial digital edition. The manhwa was published separately by Kidari Studio, which is a different company from the novel's publisher.

Did the novel win an award?

Yes, a BL novel e-book prize at the 2023 Ridi Awards.

Themes

The title is an English word borrowed into Korean, and in ordinary Korean it is not a word about vengeance at all. Payback is commercial vocabulary there, the cashback or rebate a buyer receives back after a transaction has gone through. A novel that opens on a loan shark, an inherited hospital bill and a debt nobody agreed to take on has given itself a name from the language of accounts rather than the language of retribution, and that choice sets the terms of everything after it. What Yuhan is pursuing is not justice. It is a balance returned to zero.

Read the title that way and the arrangement with Je-i stops looking like a detour from the revenge and starts looking like the same activity conducted by other means. Access is purchased, and the price is simply set in something other than money.

A novel is also the one version of this story in which a reader sees none of it. Faces, rooms and the exact damage stay descriptions, which leaves the accounting as the most solid object on the page.
