South: Beside the Sky
SYNOPSIS
South: Beside the Sky (Thai title ต้นฟ้าไต้ฝุ่น, read as Tonfah Typhoon) is a completed Thai boys' love web novel first serialized on Dek-D in 2019, and one of four connected campus-romance stories built around a single medical-school friend group, each volume named for a compass point and handed to its own couple. This one belongs to Typhoon, a young man carrying a grief his family never let him set down, and Tonfah, the neighbour who has stood beside him since childhood. After his sister's death, Typhoon’s relatives blamed him rather than mourned with him, leaving him isolated, afraid of the dark, and quietly convinced that he is too damaged to be loved well. Tonfah is the older, unhurried presence he has trusted for as long as he can remember, without ever naming what that trust had already become.
When the two reconnect as young adults, the easy shorthand of a shared childhood no longer covers what sits between them. Tonfah’s patience does the slow work of coaxing Typhoon out of the brother-shaped role he has been kept in, offering steadiness rather than pressure and waiting for a door only Typhoon can open. Old guilt resurfaces, family conflict follows it, and every step toward something spoken risks the safety of what the two already have. The obstacles here are rarely external. What the story keeps circling is permission: the careful, unglamorous business of letting one person see the parts of you that still hurt, and believing that they will stay once they have.
Readers regularly single out South as the heaviest entry in the set, a grief-and-healing slow burn that earns its warmth instead of rushing toward it, in clear contrast to the lighter, more comic register of the companion novels. Author Howlsairy published it free to read on Dek-D, where it built a large following, before the publisher Lavender collected it into a complete two-volume edition aimed at the mature-rated category. Its difficult material is handled with restraint, named rather than dwelt on, and the romance is measured out in small domestic gestures instead of grand declarations. It was later adapted by Studio Wabi Sabi as the opening arc of Fourever You Part 2 under the title Beside the Sky, bringing the pair to screen nearly six years after the first chapter went online.
