Yu Jhi-han
BIOGRAPHY
Yu Jhi-han, who also works under the name Mu Xing (牧星), is a Taiwanese director, screenwriter and editor from Yilan City, Yilan County. Yu’s credits begin in 2016 and run to the present, and the two queer titles at either end of them are separated by seven years and by a large difference in scale.
The earliest credit is assistant director on the feature The Boss (老大, 2016). Three years later came Gentleman Spa (癡情馬殺雞, 24 March 2019), an eighteen minute short film that Yu directed, wrote and cut. It follows Hao, a gay man working as a janitor at a Taipei gay spa, who gets one chance to massage an attractive customer named Kai. Lai Hao-zhe and Chris Lung play the two. It was produced by Force Films.
Two features followed in 2024, both directed by Yu: The Young Hoodlum (壞男孩, January) and The Bite of the Dolphin (海豚之惡, December), the second of which Yu also edited.
The current work is Connecting to You (整個世界,只有你連上了我), a twelve episode series plus a special, which began airing on 14 August 2026. Yu directs and shares the screenplay credit with Wen Huei-ming. It is adapted from a web novel by Beck, and the premise gives its protagonist the ability to see emotional bonds as coloured threads, with the first thread of his own leading to a police officer. Bruce Chiu and Liu Yu-ren lead. Chen Pao-ying and Hou Shuai-an produce, the band 理想混蛋 performs the theme song, and the production companies are GrX Studio and Force Films, the same Force Films that made the 2019 short.
Seen by role, the credits show a move from support to authorship. In 2016 Yu was an assistant director. The 2019 short brought directing, writing and editing together on one project, and the December 2024 feature The Bite of the Dolphin added another editing credit. On the 2026 series the work is directing and a shared screenplay credit.
Force Films produced Yu Jhi-han’s eighteen minute short Gentleman Spa in 2019 and is credited again on the 2026 series Connecting to You.
The short runs eighteen minutes, while the series has twelve episodes plus a special, and Yu directed both. Between them sit two features from 2024, The Young Hoodlum and The Bite of the Dolphin, and an assistant director credit on The Boss in 2016 precedes them all.
Gentleman Spa is a story Yu wrote and edited. Connecting to You is adapted from Beck’s web novel, with the screenplay credit shared with Wen Huei-ming.
What interests me most is the size of the step from an eighteen minute short to a twelve episode series. A short can be held in one person’s hands, while a series needs a co-writer, two producers and a band for the theme song, and the shared screenplay credit tells me Yu has chosen to work with others at that scale. I would watch Gentleman Spa first, because it shows the instincts the later work builds on, and then see how much of them survive the larger canvas.
