About this archive
Philippine BL arrived like a wave. When regular production stopped, a group of Manila companies kept going with whatever could be filmed inside a house or through a laptop camera. Gameboys built a whole romance out of video calls and game lobbies, Hello Stranger set its story in a remote university semester, and Boys’ Lockdown put the situation right in its title.
The makers are a fun mix: established names like Black Sheep, Regal, Globe Studios and Dreamscape next to The IdeaFirst Company and smaller houses. Oxin Films carries on with My Day the Series, My Story the Series, Sky Valley and Boyfriend Express. Many shows started free on YouTube and later reached Netflix and other services, and the dialogue slides between Tagalog and English the way real Manila conversations do.
Newer titles include the sports series Sugar Games and Balaraw: Blood Island, a GL thriller. My tip: begin with Gameboys to see where it all began, then try Like in the Movies or Ben x Jim. Pinoy BL has a warmth that is very easy to fall for.
