About this archive
Mafia stories put the romance inside a world of families, syndicates and territory, with at least one lead living in that structure as a boss, an heir, a bodyguard or someone dragged in against their will. The criminal world has to drive the plot; it is never mere decoration.
Why does this work so well for BL? Because nobody in that world cares about ordinary approval. The obstacles between two people become loyalty, debt, rank and survival, so the stakes are sky high and the question is never whether the love is acceptable, only whether anyone survives it.
Right now this corner is all Hong Kong flavoured: Ash, Kiss or Kill and Sammy’s Children’s Day, with China and Taiwan joining in on the co productions. Expect action, crime, enemies to lovers and forbidden love tags on almost everything. My tip: start with
Kiss or Kill if you want danger with your romance, and keep the lights on. Uff, these boys do not do anything halfway.
