About this archive
Tragedy is for stories where the ending hurts, and is meant to. The sadness is not a twist but the shape of the whole thing: circumstance, character or the world itself makes the outcome feel inevitable long before you get there.
Queer stories have a long and complicated history with sad endings, and these titles sit in different places within it. Some work inside the tradition and some push against it. Either way, the ending is the point.
On this shelf sit the Thai GL film Uranus2324, the Thai series One Year, the Taiwanese drama Smile After Tears, the Japanese crime story The Journey to Killing You and Sammy’s Children’s Day from China and Hong Kong. My tip: do not binge these back to back. Pick one, give it a quiet evening, and maybe start with
Smile After Tears, which mixes melodrama with healing and music. Then go hug someone, or your cat.
