About this archive
Viu is a streaming service operated by Viu International Ltd under PCCW Media, the Hong Kong telecommunications and media group, with the French group Canal+ holding a minority stake. It launched in Hong Kong in October 2015 and now runs in sixteen markets across Asia, the Middle East, Africa and Oceania, among them Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Myanmar, Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Egypt and several Gulf states.
Viu works on two levels. A free tier carries advertising, and a paid tier removes it and adds playback in 720p and 1080p. Content is presented with local language subtitles for each market it serves, which for BL and GL viewers in Southeast Asia usually means a Korean, Thai or Chinese series arrives subtitled soon after its home release.
The service both licenses and produces. Viu Originals are commissioned mainly in Southeast Asia and have been recognised at the Asian Television Awards and the Asian Academy Creative Awards, so a title filed here may be Viu’s own rather than an acquisition. Viu has also held repeat rights to GMM25 programming, which is one of the routes by which Thai broadcast series reach the platform with subtitles for the markets Viu covers.
