About this archive
A huge part of what gets filmed in this genre started as a novel, and this page belongs to the people who wrote one. The book may have been published commercially, posted as a web serial one chapter at a time, or released as a light novel with illustrations. In several markets the web serial is king, and the readers it gathers are what make a story attractive to adapt.
After that, it all depends on the deal. A novelist may write the screenplay, consult on it, or hand over the rights and watch from outside. Long novels get condensed, restructured or split across seasons, and devoted readers notice every change. Pen names are the norm.
This page holds Motoko Takahashi, By Blue, Chao Planoy and Lan Lin. My tip: use the novelist credit to trace a story backwards. It shows every adaptation one text produced, across drama, animation, comics and audio, and it reveals which writers have had more than one work picked up.
