Janine Gutierrez
BIOGRAPHY
Janine Gutierrez, born Janine Marie Elizabeth de Leon Gutierrez on 2 October 1989, is a Filipino actress whose screen work runs from network romance to festival cinema. She went to St. Paul College, Pasig, for elementary and high school, and later graduated from the Ateneo de Manila University with a degree in European Studies in International Business.
For a decade she was a talent of GMA Network through Sparkle, from 2011 to 2021. Her early television work there includes the variety show Party Pilipinas, the 2012 drama Makapiling Kang Muli, where she played Lynley Valencia and earned a Golden Screen TV Awards nomination for Outstanding Breakthrough Performance by an Actress, and Villa Quintana, her first main role, as Lynette Quintana. Lead parts followed in Legally Blind in 2017, as Grace Evangelista Villareal, and in Dragon Lady in 2019, as Celestina Sanchez Chan.
Her film debut came in Buy Now, Die Later, an entry in the 41st Metro Manila Film Festival in 2015. Independent cinema then became a big part of her record. In 2016 she played Jess in Lila at the Sinag Maynila Film Festival and Young Corazon in Dagsin at the 12th Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival. The film that changed her standing was Babae at Baril (2019), shown at the 7th QCinema International Film Festival, where she played the lead role credited simply as Babae.
In January 2021 she moved to ABS-CBN, and in April 2026 she also joined its talent agency Star Magic. Since 2021 she has been a host and performer on ASAP. Her ABS-CBN dramas include Marry Me, Marry You as Camille Miraflor Legaspi, Dirty Linen in 2023 as Alexa Salvacion, and Lavender Fields in 2024 and 2025, where she played the antagonist, Iris Buenavidez de Vera. On the film side she appeared in Lav Diaz’s Phantosmia (2024) at the 81st Venice International Film Festival and plays Anj in Mag-iina (The Mothering), a 2026 Cinemalaya entry.
Two 2026 series bring her together with Charlie Dizon. In The Loyalty Game she plays Silvana “Ana” Madrigal Santos, and in the Netflix Philippines series Balaraw she leads the cast as Sabina Tejeros, a woman who follows a clue about her vanished mother, Rebecca (Agot Isidro), to an uncharted island. Charlie Dizon plays Bulak, Sabina’s girlfriend, and Rae Red directs. Producer Bianca Balbuena brought her the project, which reunites her with the team behind Babae at Baril. The series is set to launch worldwide on 29 October 2026.
Okay, I have to admit something: I get a little giddy whenever a festival darling turns up in a GL story, and Janine is exactly that. She has a Best Actress trophy shelf, a Venice credit and years of prime time drama, and now she is steering a Netflix mystery in which her character has a girlfriend right beside her. Watch her for the way she plays people under pressure; she is great at characters who keep moving when the floor gives way.
If you only have one evening, go to Babae at Baril first. It is the film that won her the big acting prizes, it comes from the same team as Balaraw, and it gives you a clear picture of what Rae Red does with her. Then come back for Sabina and Bulak on the island. I will be right there with snacks.
