He came out of a university film club and a festival circuit, and then directed a boys love drama.

Shogo Kusano (草野翔吾), born 18 April 1984 in Kiryu, started directing in the film club at Waseda University’s Faculty of Social Sciences and collected student festival awards before turning professional in 2007. In 2026 he directed The Boy and I Who Will Break Up in 100 Days, six episodes for C&I entertainment, adapted from Asahara Naoto’s novel.

Japanese boys love is commissioned like any other television, and it draws its directors from the general pool rather than from a specialist one. That is a structural difference from Thailand, where the largest studios keep in house directors who work almost exclusively inside the genre and develop a recognisable house style across dozens of productions.

The consequence is visible in the work.
