What happens

Manfan has just finished university, and life picks that exact moment to fall apart. Her family has gone bankrupt, her relationship has ended, and every part of her week seems to be heading downhill. All she wants is a little relief, so she pays for the company of a charming woman named Araya for an evening. Araya is warm, attentive and full of reassurance, and she tells Manfan that good things are on their way.

Then Manfan lands an important job. On the other side of the desk sits her new boss, Issara, and Issara and Araya are one and the same woman. The person who comforted Manfan on a truly awful night now runs the office she has to walk into every morning. Both of them know exactly what happened that evening. Neither of them can say a word about it at work.

That overlap between a private night and a professional relationship is the whole engine of the story. A comforting stranger becomes a manager, an evening that was supposed to stay in the past keeps walking into meetings, and Manfan has to work out what she owes a boss who once saw her at her lowest.

Aom Punyawee Jungcharoen plays Manfan and Ying Anada Prakobkit plays Issara, the woman Manfan first meets as Araya. Around them sits a small circle of colleagues, so the office is where most of the trouble is set to happen.

Your hired comfort is now your performance review

Some first days at work involve a confusing coffee machine. Manfan's involves discovering that her new boss is the woman she paid to keep her company on a terrible night. I laughed out loud at the setup, then felt a little sorry for her, then laughed again. That is the exact mix of feelings a good office romance should give me.

What I like most is how little the story needs to invent to create trouble. There is no evil rival in the official outline and no lost memory. Two women share one evening that nobody at the office knows about, and every ordinary work moment after that, a signature, a deadline, a quiet word in a corridor, now carries two meanings at once.

Araya by night, Issara by day

The credits list Ying Anada Prakobkit's character as Isara on TMDB, and the official outline makes clear that Araya and Issara are the same woman. I love a character with two names, because the name someone uses tells you which version of them you are getting. The question I am bringing to episode one is simple: which name does she answer to when she is alone with Manfan?

Two leads coming from different directions

Ying arrives with a long run of Thai television behind her, including Channel 3 series such as The Secret of Us and My Safe Zone, and her first leading part in I Love Me a Medium. Aom Punyawee Jungcharoen is the other half of the pairing, playing the woman whose terrible week sets everything in motion. A story built on a secret needs two performers who can play whole conversations with their eyes while saying something completely different out loud, and that is exactly the skill this setup asks of them.

A long wait, worth it

FRT Entertainment premiered the first official teaser on its YouTube channel on 21 November 2024, so this one has been on my list for a long time. FRT is also the studio behind Shades. The cast around the leads leans on colleagues, with Kewalin Udomaksorn as Iris and Pimmada Chompurat as Olive, so the office itself looks set to be the main stage.

What this review covers

Nothing has aired yet, so everything here is based on the official outline, the credits and the teaser, and I am not giving it a score. The premiere date is still settling, with different listings naming different dates, so I will update this page with the confirmed schedule and my thoughts once the first episodes are out. Until then, Buy My Boss sits at the very top of my GL watchlist, right where a story about a very awkward first day belongs.
