Mark Anthony Oblea

BIOGRAPHY

Mark Anthony Oblea is a Filipino actor who came to television as a singer, not an actor, and reached Boys’ Love ten years later by a route that turns out to be well travelled.

He appeared first on the Eat Bulaga! singing segment Spogify feat. Singing Baes, alongside Allen Cecilio, and was eliminated in the daily round. In September 2016 he joined Pinoy Boyband Superstar, ABS-CBN’s adaptation of the Latin American format La Banda, which set out to assemble a new Filipino boy band from scratch. The season ran twenty-eight episodes to 11 December 2016 and he appears in sixteen of them, so he lasted deep into the competition. The five places went to Niel Murillo, Russell Reyes, Ford Valencia, Tristan Ramirez and Joao Constancia, who became BoybandPH. He was not among them.

Acting followed. He appeared in the 2018 Philippine film Tres, a 118-minute triptych about three people going to desperate lengths to keep their secrets, and in G! in 2019. In 2025 he played Emman in the Philippine adaptation of It’s Okay to Not Be Okay, which ran eighty episodes on Kapamilya Channel between 21 July and 17 October, a weekday broadcast pace, and is by a wide margin the largest job on his record.

In 2026 he plays Sharky across all ten episodes of The Boyfriend Express, the Oxin Films Boys’ Love series released on YouTube between 2 May and 4 July, in which a rigid executive hires an escort to teach him how to be a boyfriend and the arrangement stops being an arrangement.

BLGLFlix editorial view

The most interesting thing on this page is not really about him. Two contestants from the 2016 season of Pinoy Boyband Superstar later worked in Philippine Boys’ Love. One is Mark Anthony Oblea. The other is Kokoy de Santos, who three and a half years later played Gavreel Alarcon in Gameboys, and again in Gameboys: The Movie and Gameboys 2.

Neither of them won. The show was built to manufacture a five-man pop group, it produced BoybandPH, and the people it did not select went off and did something else. What at least two of them did was become part of a queer drama industry that in September 2016 did not exist in the Philippines in any recognisable form. Gameboys premiered on 22 May 2020, a screenlife series set inside the Luzon community quarantine, told through the screens its two characters were stuck behind. A reality format designed to find pop singers turns out, in hindsight, to have been assembling a cast list for a genre nobody had started yet.

Two people can only carry so much weight. Two contestants out of a large field is a pattern visible only after the fact, and there is no claim here that the show was a BL pipeline in any intentional sense. What it does show is where Philippine BL actually recruited from: television talent competitions, which is exactly where a country with a huge singing-contest culture and no BL industry would have to find its performers. Put it next to Kim Dong-won in South Korea, who was on ENA’s music talent search The Scout in 2026 while leading a BL series. Two countries, ten years apart, the same route in.

On his own record, the job that dwarfs everything else is the one that gets left out. It’s Okay to Not Be Okay ran eighty episodes in under three months. That is daily-drama volume, the kind of work that keeps an actor employed and almost never gets written about in English, because eighty-episode Filipino teleseryes fall outside what international drama coverage bothers with.

TRIVIA

He was on two singing competitions before he acted in anything. First the Eat Bulaga! segment Spogify feat. Singing Baes, where he was eliminated in the daily round, then Pinoy Boyband Superstar in 2016.

Pinoy Boyband Superstar is the Philippine version of La Banda, the Latin American format created by Simon Cowell for Univision. Its purpose was to build a five-man group from open auditions.

He appears in sixteen of the season’s twenty-eight episodes, which means he survived a long way into the competition without reaching the final five.

Kokoy de Santos was a contestant on the same season. Four years later he played Gavreel Alarcon in Gameboys, and again in Gameboys: The Movie and Gameboys 2. Two contestants from one 2016 boy band search ended up in Philippine BL.

His largest job is not a BL. It’s Okay to Not Be Okay, the Philippine adaptation of the Korean series, ran eighty episodes in under three months in 2025. That is more screen time than everything else on his record put together.

The Boyfriend Express was released on YouTube rather than a subscription platform. Oxin Films has built a substantial Philippine BL catalogue this way.

TMDB holds one photograph of him, a one-line biography, and no date of birth, place of birth, IMDb identifier or social account.
