Two adaptations of the same novel, ten years apart, tell you almost everything about what happened to Chinese danmei in between. In 2016 雙程 was a mainland web film, made in China, released on the Chinese internet, and advertised with posters that openly placed it in a lineage running through Brokeback Mountain and Lan Yu. Nobody was pretending it was about friendship.

The 2026 version is bigger in every measurable way. Twelve episodes of an hour each rather than two web films. But its origin countries are recorded as China and Singapore, its lead is a Singaporean actor, and its distributor is GagaOOLala in Taiwan. The story did not change and the classification did not soften. What changed is the paperwork and the map.

This site reached the same conclusion on the Feng Nong page, tracing eight danmei adaptations from a de-queered mainland television epic in 2017 to openly classified BL made in Cantonese and in Thailand by 2026. Not one of the openly classified ones is a mainland Mandarin production. Double Helix is now a second, independent confirmation of that pattern, arriving from a completely different production company and a different novelist. When two unrelated filmographies produce the same shape, it stops being an anecdote.

The Singaporean element looked isolated when this page was first written. It is not. Working through the same batch of records we found Lost to You (沦陷), a twelve episode Mandarin BL series that premiered on 15 May 2026, exactly one week after this one, directed by Xue Lang, carrying the same two recorded origin countries and the same distributor, and sharing no cast, crew or production company with Double Helix. Two unconnected productions landing on the identical arrangement seven days apart is a route rather than a coincidence. Singapore offers a mainland producer of danmei the one combination nowhere else provides: a Mandarin speaking screen industry and a separate jurisdiction. Thailand has the capacity but not the language. Taiwan has the language and the platform but carries its own politics. Singapore has the language and a passport.

A word about what this page does not know. One credit is not a career, and Li Yingyi may well have a body of work that public databases have simply not indexed. We are not going to inflate the page by describing the director’s style from a single series or by borrowing the show’s reputation and attaching it to a person. The work is documented above. The person, so far, is a name and a credit.
