SYNOPSIS

Lin (Sarocha Chankimha) and Kath (Rebecca Patricia Armstrong) grow up bound together on Thailand's coast, forming a childhood connection that shapes both of their lives long before either of them understands what it means. A sudden tragedy tears the two apart, scattering their paths in different directions and leaving behind an unresolved bond that neither can fully explain to the people around them. Years later, the two women have built entirely different lives, defined by opposite relationships to distance: Lin trains as an astronaut reaching toward the edge of the solar system, while Kath becomes a free diver descending into the pressure of the open ocean, each of them chasing extremes that echo just how far apart their circumstances once pushed them.

When fate places Lin and Kath back within reach of each other, Uranus 2324 follows their attempt to close a gap that is as much emotional as it is physical, spanning the vacuum of space and the depths of the sea. A close friend, Prim (Torfan Taweema), and the families on either side surround the two leads with the history and the old wounds that first drove them apart: Kath's mother (Siriam Pakdeedumrongrit) and Kath's father (Amarin Nitipon), and Lin's father (Ninnart Sinchai). On the other side of the story, the NASA administrator (Erich Fleshman) and Thomas Weston (Christophe Gerber), a fellow astronaut, anchor the space programme storyline that carries Lin toward the mission at the heart of the film. As the astronaut and the free diver edge closer to a reunion that once seemed impossible, past and present are folded together, tracing exactly how tragedy separated them and what it will take, across years and physical extremes, to find their way back to one another.

Directed by Thanadol Nuansut for VelCurve Studio, and written directly for the screen by Thitipong Chaisati and Nut Nualpang with Nuansut himself rather than adapted from a novel, Uranus 2324 pairs Sarocha Chankimha and Rebecca Patricia Armstrong, the on-screen duo known to audiences as FreenBecky since their 2022 breakout in GAP The Series, in a big-screen science-fiction romance built entirely around the emotional distance its two characters must close. It premiered in Thai cinemas on 4 July 2024 at roughly 148 minutes, pushing Thai girls' love storytelling out of its usual television format and into a theatrical release, and later reached international audiences through Netflix and Prime Video. The tagline, that love is bigger than the universe and deeper than the ocean, doubles as a description of the film's structure, which keeps one half of its story in orbit and the other underwater and never lets the science-fiction machinery overtake the simpler question of whether Lin and Kath can end up in the same place again.

EDITOR’S VERDICT

7.8/10

Uranus 2324 raises the bar for Thai GL storytelling by taking its central romance out of the school hallway or office cubicle and putting it, quite literally, into orbit and the ocean depths, using astronaut Lin and free diver Kath's professions as a bold metaphor for the distance tragedy carved between them.

A Theatrical Swing For A Streaming Genre

Most Thai GL love stories live on television or streaming platforms in eight-to-twelve episode runs; Uranus 2324 instead commits to a nearly two-and-a-half-hour theatrical release, giving director Thanadol Nuansut room to build out the space program and free-diving sequences with production value rarely seen in the genre. The film's science-fiction framing never overtakes its emotional core, using space travel and deep-sea diving less as spectacle and more as physical proof of how far Lin and Kath's lives had drifted from each other.

Sarocha Chankimha and Rebecca Patricia Armstrong, already a known quantity to Thai GL audiences through their GAP The Series breakout, carry the film's emotional weight across its childhood and adult timelines, with the chemistry that made "FreenBecky" a global fan phenomenon translating convincingly to the bigger canvas of a feature film.

Where The Film Earns Its Runtime

  • The dual astronaut-diver premise gives the film a visual identity distinct from nearly every other Thai GL release, pairing space program production design with underwater cinematography in the same story.
  • A supporting cast anchored by Torfan Taweema and the leads' on-screen parents grounds the science-fiction premise in a recognizably domestic, tragedy-driven backstory.
  • The film's marketing tagline, that love is bigger than the universe and deeper than the ocean, doubles as an accurate description of its two-hemisphere structure.

A Long Reach For A Genre Built On Brevity

At nearly 150 minutes, Uranus 2324 asks more patience of its audience than the typical Thai GL series episode, and viewers expecting a tightly paced romance may find the science-fiction machinery around Lin's astronaut storyline slows the momentum of the central relationship in stretches. That ambition is also precisely what sets the film apart from its television-bound peers.

Final Score: 7.8/10
