What happens

Lin (Sarocha Chankimha) and Kath (Rebecca Patricia Armstrong) grow up bound together on Thailand's coast, forming a childhood connection that shapes both of their lives long before either of them understands what it means. A sudden tragedy tears the two apart, scattering their paths in different directions and leaving behind an unresolved bond that neither can fully explain to the people around them. Years later, the two women have built entirely different lives, defined by opposite relationships to distance: Lin trains as an astronaut reaching toward the edge of the solar system, while Kath becomes a free diver descending into the pressure of the open ocean, each of them chasing extremes that echo just how far apart their circumstances once pushed them.

When fate places Lin and Kath back within reach of each other, Uranus 2324 follows their attempt to close a gap that is as much emotional as it is physical, spanning the vacuum of space and the depths of the sea. A close friend, Prim (Torfan Taweema), and the families on either side surround the two leads with the history and the old wounds that first drove them apart: Kath's mother (Siriam Pakdeedumrongrit) and Kath's father (Amarin Nitipon), and Lin's father (Ninnart Sinchai). On the other side of the story, the NASA administrator (Erich Fleshman) and Thomas Weston (Christophe Gerber), a fellow astronaut, anchor the space programme storyline that carries Lin toward the mission at the heart of the film. As the astronaut and the free diver edge closer to a reunion that once seemed impossible, past and present are folded together, tracing how tragedy separated them and what it will take, across years and physical extremes, to find their way back to one another.

Directed by Thanadol Nuansut for VelCurve Studio, and written directly for the screen by Thitipong Chaisati and Nut Nualpang with Nuansut himself rather than adapted from a novel, Uranus 2324 pairs Sarocha Chankimha and Rebecca Patricia Armstrong, the on-screen duo known to audiences as FreenBecky since their 2022 pairing in GAP The Series, in a big-screen science-fiction romance built around the emotional distance its two characters must close. It premiered in Thai cinemas on 4 July 2024 at roughly 148 minutes and later reached international audiences through Netflix and Prime Video. The tagline, that love is bigger than the universe and deeper than the ocean, doubles as a description of the film's structure, which keeps one half of its story in orbit and the other underwater.

Uranus 2324 takes its central romance out of the school hallway or office cubicle and puts it, quite literally, into orbit and the ocean depths, using astronaut Lin and free diver Kath's professions as a metaphor for the distance tragedy carved between them.

A Theatrical Swing

Uranus 2324 is a nearly two-and-a-half-hour theatrical release, which gives director Thanadol Nuansut room to build out the space program and free-diving sequences. The film's science-fiction framing never overtakes its emotional core, using space travel and deep-sea diving less as spectacle and more as physical proof of how far Lin and Kath's lives had drifted from each other.

Sarocha Chankimha and Rebecca Patricia Armstrong, known to Thai GL audiences through GAP The Series, carry the film's emotional weight across its childhood and adult timelines, and their "FreenBecky" chemistry translates to the bigger canvas of a feature film.

Where The Film Earns Its Runtime

  • The dual astronaut-diver premise gives the film a clear visual identity, pairing space program production design with underwater cinematography in the same story.
  • A supporting cast anchored by Torfan Taweema and the leads' on-screen parents grounds the science-fiction premise in a domestic, tragedy-driven backstory.
  • The film's marketing tagline, that love is bigger than the universe and deeper than the ocean, doubles as a description of its two-hemisphere structure.

Runtime and Scope

At 148 minutes, the film gives the science-fiction material around Lin's astronaut storyline a sizeable share of the runtime alongside the central relationship.

Final Score: 7.8/10

A cinema release now sits on two streaming services.

Netflix and Prime Video both carry the film. For a Thai feature that opened on 4 July 2024, that is a short route to viewers outside Thailand. A series telling the same story would have spread it across a broadcast schedule and a streaming window instead.

Thitipong Chaisati and Nut Nualpang wrote the screenplay, director Thanadol Nuansut is credited as a co-writer, and nothing was adapted from a book.

Three names on an original script make a different production shape from a novel handed to one adapter, and the film has one release date in place of a run of episode dates.

The two leads also appear together in GAP and The Loyal Pin, so three very different formats, a film and two series, share the same pairing.

The release order is easy to overlook. Uranus 2324 opened in cinemas on 4 July 2024, and The Loyal Pin, the same pairing's next project, began its Sunday broadcasts on 4 August, exactly a month later, so the two leads moved from a 148-minute science-fiction feature to a sixteen-episode period series within weeks.

The making of the film shows how much preparation went into its two halves. The leads attended workshops in acting, stunt work, free diving and English scientific vocabulary in September and October 2023, principal photography began in New York City on 30 November 2023, and the largest effects sequences were completed in a Bangkok studio on 17 March 2024. It suits viewers who like a romance that uses genre, here space travel and deep-sea diving, to give distance a physical form, and who are content to spend two and a half hours doing it.

Themes

An astronaut and a free diver hold the two jobs in which a person carries a survivable environment into one that would otherwise kill them, in the first case because there is far too little pressure and in the second because there is far too much. The film picks the only pair of professions whose hazards are exact opposites and whose discipline is identical.

Both are measured in permitted time. A mission has a duration fixed before anyone leaves the ground, and a free diver's descent is bounded by a single breath. Lin and Kath have each chosen work defined by how long a person is allowed to stay somewhere, which is a pointed choice for two women whose difficulty is the years they spent apart.

In this film the obstacle is distance itself, a quantity rather than a person, which is why it can be about longing without needing anybody to forbid anything.

Where it was filmed

New York City, United States. Locations across Thailand, with the largest sequences completed in a Bangkok studio.
