Ami Koshimizu

Ami Koshimizu (Japanese: 小清水亜美, born 15 February 1986) is a Japanese voice actor, stage actor and singer from Kokubunji in Tokyo. She is signed to Office Restart, having previously been with Production Baobab and Axl One, and has well over two hundred screen credits stretching from 2002 to work already announced for 2027.

She came to the industry through the stage rather than through anime. She joined the children’s theatre company Gekidan Wakakusa at twelve, and the push came from her grandmother, who had noticed how much she loved school plays, explained to her what a theatre company was, and brought home a recruitment flyer that happened to arrive in the post. Her mother was less convinced, worried that she would not stick with it or that it would get in the way of entrance exams. Koshimizu had a habit, by her own account, of setting herself a target and quitting the moment she met it, which is how she abandoned swimming as soon as she could manage twenty-five metres in all four strokes and skiing as soon as she could hold a snowplough turn.

Voice acting was not something she knew about as a job. In her third year of junior high a manager at the company asked whether voice work interested her and pointed out that a senior of hers there, Mayumi Iizuka, was playing Misty in Pokemon, which she was watching at the time. She went to one of Iizuka’s live shows, came away convinced, and asked her agency to put her up for voice auditions. There were not many. She prepared by reading Ichiro Nagai’s book on the craft, asking her theatre teachers what it actually meant to act with only a voice, and asking an anime-obsessed classmate what she ought to watch, which is how she ended up studying Ronin Warriors, Saint Seiya and Weiss Kreuz. She chose a correspondence high school and told her mother she would find her path within those three years or give up cleanly and go to university.

She found it. Her first credit came in 2002 on MegaMan NT Warrior, and the following year she took the title role in Ashita no Nadja as Nadja Applefield and played Claes in Gunslinger Girl. The roles that made her name followed quickly: Tenma Tsukamoto in School Rumble (2004), Anemone in Eureka Seven (2005), Kallen Stadtfeld in Code Geass (2006), Holo in Spice and Wolf (2008) and Hibiki Hojo, better known as Cure Melody, in Suite PreCure (2011).

Her later career has stayed dense. She has played Shizuri Mugino across A Certain Magical Index and A Certain Scientific Railgun, Kouyou Ozaki in Bungo Stray Dogs, Emilia Ludowell in The Misfit of Demon King Academy, Pairin in The Apothecary Diaries, Kuusetsu in Chained Soldier, Nozomi Yuitsuka in Medalist and roles in Death Time, KonoSuba, My Hero Academia, Rurouni Kenshin and Beyblade X. She sings as well, and performed a theme song for Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Eternal the Movie Part 1 in 2021.

She voices Nozomi Fujisaki in the Cherry Magic! Thirty Years of Virginity Can Make You a Wizard?! anime, both the 2024 television series and the film released in December of that year.
