Saratswadee Wongsomphet

BIOGRAPHY

Saratswadee Wongsomphet (Thai: สรัสวดี วงศ์สมเพ็ชร), known by the nickname Nay (นาย) and sometimes romanised Saratsawadi, born 20 October 1971, is a Thai film and television director and screenwriter. By any measure of chronology she is the single most important director in the history of Thai girls’ love. She directed Yes or No in 2010, and she is still directing GL in 2026, which gives her a run of five verified GL credits across sixteen years, longer than anyone else working in the category.

She came up through Thai action cinema, in the crews that made Thailand’s martial arts films internationally famous. She was second assistant director on Ong-Bak (2003) and first assistant director on Born to Fight (2004), then on 4 Romance (2008) and The Melody (2012).

Her first credit as a director is Yes or No (อยากรัก ก็รักเลย, 2010), a university-set film about two roommates that dealt directly with homophobia and first love between women. TMDB’s own biography of her records that the film became widely known abroad, particularly in China. She returned to direct and write Yes or No 2 (2012), and directed Namaste Hello, Bye-Bye (2013), in which she also makes her only on-screen appearance, as Bung.

From 2014 she has worked almost continuously in Thai television drama, mostly on long runs: Full House (2014, 20 episodes), Pink Sin (2018, 24 episodes), Amazed by Love (2018), Secret Garden (2019, 20 episodes), Praomook (2021, 15 episodes), You Are My Heartbeat (2022, 20 episodes), You Are My Makeup Artist (2022, 16 episodes), Love Destiny 2 (2023, 26 episodes), My Love in the Countryside (2024, 24 episodes) and Money, My Love (2026, 20 episodes).

Her return to GL comes in 2024 with The Secret of Us (ใจซ่อนรัก, 8 episodes), adapted from a novel. She followed it with Only You (เพียงเธอ, 2025, 14 episodes), on which she is credited as both director and screenwriter, and Fulfill (รักเติมเต็ม, 2026, 8 episodes).

BLGLFlix editorial view. Her filmography settles a question that gets answered wrongly almost everywhere, including in the first draft of our own page on Kanittha Kwunyoo. Thai GL did not begin with 23.5 in 2024, and it did not begin with GAP in 2022 either. It began with Yes or No in 2010, a feature film with two women at the centre of it, made by a woman who had learned her trade on Ong-Bak. The genuinely interesting fact is what happened next, which is nothing. Twelve years separate Yes or No from the first Thai GL series. A film can prove that an audience exists; it cannot build a category, because a category needs recurring faces, a broadcast slot, a fandom with something to come back to every week, and a company willing to lose money for two seasons. That is why GAP in 2022 mattered more than its quality alone would suggest, and why 23.5 in 2024 mattered again. Our own read is that the correct way to describe Saratswadee is not as a precursor but as the one continuous thread: she was there for the beginning in 2010, she was absent from GL through the entire twelve-year gap, and she came back to direct three GL series in three years once the infrastructure finally existed to sustain them.

TRIVIA

  • She directed Yes or No in 2010, fourteen years before GMMTV’s 23.5 and twelve years before the first Thai GL series.
  • Her training was in action cinema. She worked on Ong-Bak and Born to Fight, two of the films that made Thai martial arts cinema known internationally, before directing anything of her own.
  • There is a twelve-year gap in her GL work. After Yes or No 2 in 2012 she made no GL at all until The Secret of Us in 2024, and then made three GL series in three years.
  • She has directed four series of twenty episodes or more, and Love Destiny 2 (2023) at twenty-six is her longest.
  • Her only acting appearance is in a film she directed herself, Namaste Hello, Bye-Bye (2013), as Bung.
  • She has written as well as directed on two productions, Yes or No 2 (2012) and Only You (2025).
  • She has two credits dated 2026, Money, My Love at twenty episodes and Fulfill at eight.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Who is Saratswadee Wongsomphet?

Saratswadee Wongsomphet (สรัสวดี วงศ์สมเพ็ชร), nicknamed Nay, born 20 October 1971, is a Thai film and television director and screenwriter. She directed Yes or No (2010) and, more recently, The Secret of Us (2024), Only You (2025) and Fulfill (2026).

Why does she matter to GL?

She has five verified GL credits spanning sixteen years, from Yes or No in 2010 to Fulfill in 2026. Nobody else working in Thai GL has a run anywhere near that long.

Was Yes or No the first Thai GL work?

It is the earliest Thai GL production we can verify, and it is a feature film, not a series. The first Thai GL series came twelve years later, in 2022. Both facts matter and they are often conflated.

What did she do before directing?

She worked in Thai action cinema crews. She was second assistant director on Ong-Bak (2003) and first assistant director on Born to Fight (2004), 4 Romance (2008) and The Melody (2012).

What are her GL titles exactly?

Yes or No (2010, director), Yes or No 2 (2012, director and writer), The Secret of Us (2024, director, 8 episodes), Only You (2025, director and screenwriter, 14 episodes) and Fulfill (2026, director, 8 episodes).

Does she only make GL?

No, and it is a small part of her output. Most of her work is mainstream Thai television drama, including Love Destiny 2 (2023, 26 episodes), My Love in the Countryside (2024, 24 episodes), Pink Sin (2018, 24 episodes) and Money, My Love (2026, 20 episodes).

Has she acted?

Once. She appears as Bung in Namaste Hello, Bye-Bye (2013), a film she also directed. It is the only acting credit on her record.
